the lead defense attorney abbe lowell said in court today that was a deliberate decision by the defense to try to focus the case in on the issues of the alleged campaign finance violation and to kind of push into the background the broader issues of the affair and covering up the affair because, as i say, the defense's argument is that that's really a personal matter. that's nothing that somebody should be on trial in court for, and i think they felt that some of those witnesses might have led to highly emotional testimony that might maybe distract the jurors, confuse them, or perhaps make them feel unsympathetic to mr. edwards. >> john edwards facing six felony counts. if counseled guilty, he could potentially face up to 30 years in prison. the jury will have the case tomorrow with instructions from the judge. what will those instructions be? >> well, some of the instructions are pretty critical here. the key phrase that relates to the instructions has to do with trying figure out whether these payments that were made by the two edwards' donors were really campaign contributions. there

if there's a mistrial, the lawyers, abbe lowell and company, who are representing john edwards, could department and say, look, enough is enough. he's been punished, he's suffered, this case is not a deterrent to anyone. the facts of this case are so odd, it's not likely to be repeated by anyone else. so a mistrial is good for the defense, delay is good for the defense. the only thing that's good for the prosecution is a conviction. and we don't have that yet, although, on that one count, there may be a conviction. >> so, jeff, is there a way to sum up, really, kind of where the arguments stood? they finished up testimony, we did not hear from some of the key players, like -- well, many of the key witnesses, as joe was pointing out. there are a lot of gaps, here, because many of the key witnesses did not take the stand, could not take the stand. we did not hear from john edwards, did not hear from rielle hunter. what's your take of the key argument from both sides if we didn't hear from some of these key witnesses? >> i have never seen a trial with more of the protagonists offstage. y

lowell melzer joins us from city police headquarters with the latest. >> police tell us they remain concerned about the amount of violence over the weekend. however, they do point out they have made progress in a number of these cases. >> i had about nor -- four non- fatal shootings, including a stabbing. >> a weekend of violence left four people dead. the bloodshed began friday night at about 9:00 p.m. when a 27- year-old man was shot in the hundred block of bridge be road. he would survive. a couple of hours later on saturday, a 25-year-old man shot and the shoulder -- in the shoulder and leg. he would survive as well. around 2:45 a.m., a woman was stopped in her car in the 3200 block of east northern parkway was shot as a car pulled up next door and opened fire. the violence spread into mother's day resulting in four homicides. one at franklin and loudoun avenues. the other 2600 park heights terrace. the other on the -- on chilson street. -- chilton street. >> we have some people of interest in custody and being cast -- questioned by detectives. police are making progress on the others. >>

lead defense attorney abby lowell was not too happy with the judge's decision and suggested it might be overturned on appeal. martha. martha: very interesting. because that really is so pivotal to this whole case, the decision will whether or not this was money that was going into the campaign or whether it's personal and would have happened regardless of whether he was running for vice president. so what is the defense going to do to get around that set back? >> well, yesterday, they did what they could to sort of get around that. they called laura hag arrested -- haggard, the former cfo for edwards' presidential campaign in 2008, she discussed a federal election commission, fec, audit of the campaign which determined there were no excessive contributions and did not require reporting the donations supporting edwards' mistress and child. to underscore the personal nature of some of the expenditures, defense lawyer abby lowell asked haggard whether the campaign would have to file with the fec for any expenses covering an ob/gyn appointment for rielle hunter or her child, haggard said

then it was abbe lowell's turn. he did the closing for the defense. he has a completely different style. he is from washington, d.c., as you know. not from north carolina. he moves around a lot as he talks. he checked his watch at least six times that i saw because they were under a time constrai constraint. he was very laser focused in the law, and, of course, that's what this trial is all about, suzanne. it is about the law and did john edwards willfully and knowingly violate a campaign finance law or two or three or four or six. there are six in the indictment. so he spent a lot of time not telling a story, but concentrating on the law and ripping to shreds andrew and cheri young. they, of course, the key prosecution witnesses. at one point he called them the bonnie and clyde of this case when he talked about andrew young saying, well, we had to go on with this scheme after the election ended because the candidate wanted to be the vice president or maybe attorney general. abbe lowell said to that, you can just laugh right out loud at that. so it wa

lowell nelson is live downtown with more on today's testimony. >> after a brief closing argument late this evening, at this case is now in the hands of the judge, pamela white. this case lasted about two weeks, and all came to a head when he took to the stand in his own defense. >> he maintained his composure in testified truthfully and honestly. i think he did perfectly. >> his attorney react to his client's testimony wednesday. he maintains a 4.0 gpa at john hopkins university and served three years in the israeli army and said he was just trying to diffuse a situation that turned into a huge misunderstanding. he testified on november 19, 2010 after receiving a radio call on his neighborhood watch radio for a suspicious person on falstaff road. in his car he spotted an african american teenager who would later be named the alleged victim in this case walking into people's yards and looking through windows. he also said he saw the teenager pulling on the door handles of a silver suv. he said he stopped a car and got out and try to introduce himself when his brother got out and said,
