nbc's kate snow sat down with lowery who wanted to share his story and i spoke with kate earlier. she says there is a lot we can learn from his experience. it's not just a story of an fbi agent that's corrupt. this is a true story of just how -- what addiction can do to you, am i right? >> yeah, matt lowery would tell you this was not about wrongdoing but about a drug habit that he just couldn't fight off. he got addicted to prescription painkillers for a problem that he had in his stomach. and then when he couldn't get those from his doctor anymore the next easiest thing for him to get was heroin because he was on -- an fbi agent and had heroin all around him. e shouldn't be doing this. he was clear enough to know that he shouldn't be taking those bags of evidence, but the overpowering urge to stop himself from going through withdrawals, he needed to maintain his habit is what he would say. and so he just kept stealing these baggies because it was so easy for him to do 25 drug defendants in the washington area are back on the streets because he tampered with evidence in their cas

rebecca: this is a case of matthew lowery, a federal agent at the fbi washington field office. he admitted in march to 64 counts of stealing drugs and evidence from cases he and other agents were working on. today, he, his wife, and his family begged for mercy from the court in sentencing. he said he had become addicted to pain medication because of colitis he had been diagnosed with when he was 26 years old. he said once he was no longer able to get the medication that had been prescribed to him from a doctor, he did begin stealing evidence from the fbi from the very cases he had been working on. not only did he steal evidence which with the drugs, but he began a series of ways to cover up those crimes. today in court, the judge expressed a great deal of something, saying that matthew was a sterling fbi agent but was a heroin addict. he showed a great deal of sympathy for those who have become addicted to drugs and heroin, but he also said that matthew lowery had up taken an oath to uphold the laws of this land and was going to be held to a higher standard because he was an fb
