and lois lowry. what a great group at one table. welcome, one and all.first read this when it first came out? >> a couple of years after. 18 years ago. i was looking for a project. coversaw this wonderful when i was looking through a catalog of kids books because i wanted my kids to see this movie. i came across this cover with a real old guy on the cover and i said, this looks interesting. i started to read it and i loved it. it was a kids book. as an adult, i was just knocked out to find out my kids said, we studied that book in school. there is a lesson plan. i am getting more and more excited. i said this would be a cinch to get off the ground. and then i find it is on the list of banned books as well, which further excited me, which further excited. -- excited me. but it proved to be quite difficult to the controversy stopped us from getting this through for 18 years. the world that lois created is an amazing one and a lot of the story takes place injonas' mind -- in jonas' mind. the challenge was, how do we get this to financiers where they can see

more details about what is happening, i'm joined by "washington post" reporter wesley lowry. thank you for being back with us this morning. >> thanks for having me. >> you've been reporting for us throughout the week. the story is about the death of michael brown and the volatile situation in ferguson. but what happened to you? >> reporter: of course, and one thing i would note up front is that the story is not be the journalists here, but the journalists are in many ways the eyes and ears of the nation. our experience in a lot of ways are what some of this story is about. as i listened to that audio. when tremaine, who i consider a friend, someone i look up to immensely. when i looked at that audio when i got out of jail, it brought tears. my experience is at mcdonald's, i was working with ryan, ryan and i were both there working, during protests, charging our phones, police officers came in and they initially said you should leave. it's going to get hot, you guys should get out of here. we said, we're fine, we know it's going to get hot and that's why we're here. the office

so reporters lowry and another reporter from "the huffington post" named ryan reilly were taken intoustody, they were handcuffed and detained. both say they were aggressively handled. i want to bring in cnn's senior media correspondent and host of "reliable sources" brian stelter to talk about this along with mike brooks, hln law enforcement analyst. mike, as you were seeing video of this, was this proper police procedure? >> absolutely not. i looked at this and having been with a can -- a police officer for over 26 years and the emergency response team in washington for a long, long time, no, this was not proper at all. number one, when is the police now in charge of closing down restaurants? was there a threat to this restaurant in were these reporters in danger? to. it seems that they were not. the manager should have asked them to leave if they were going to decide to shut down that restaurant for public safety reasons. but they were not. and to just -- flex cuff somebody and take them outside and stand outside the restaurant for 15 minutes after they were arrested is not proper

two reporters were among at least 16 people detained, including wesley lowrie from "the washington posted my bag. grabbed my phone n put me in temporary restraints. >> as anger and violence flares in the community undersiege, why did the police use so much force, and why aren't local police forces more representative of the racially diverse communities that they are supposed to serve? this hour we'll hear from president obama as missouri governor jay nixon meets with local leaders. last night the governor tweeted situation in ferguson does not represent who we are.

>> i was looking at wesley lowry's explanation on his twitter feed. he says no explanation why we were in custody other than we were quote trespassing at a mcdonalds. i got to give credit to the journalists. even though they were roughed up, one used the word assaulted, they turned the story back to the others in the police van with them. they described one person screaming in the back of the police van calling out for paramedics and the calls were refused and mocked by the police. they are putting the spotlight back on others -- the people who were there, of course, covering, the protesters they are trying to tell the the stories about tonight. >> brian, thanks very much. brian stelter reporting for us. more on a key fact in this story. some say the key fact, in fact, one that is clearly not made things better in ferguson like many other towns across the country. the population is the majority african american, but as david mattingly reports, the police force is overwhelmingly white. >> black shirt, please turn around, walk away. >> reporter: even u.

. >> you and leslie lowrie of the "washington post" were arrested and released 45 minutes later. never charged with anything. have you figured out the names of the arresting officers yet? because you said on wednesday they wouldn't tell you their names. >> reporter: absolutely not. i've encountered one of the individuals who works with the ferguson police department. in front of other officers requested his name, taken photos of him when i was surrounded with a lot of other media so there weent an issue of me being arrested again. i haven't seen the county officer who was the one who actually slammed my head into the door on the way out and was the worst physically abusive. i asked i guess the sheriffs last night to identify him by showing the photo i had and he declined to do so and sent me to internal affairs. so we'll see. we're not sure where the process is going to go to next, but we hope to identify who that officer is next. >> what was it like for you to hear president obama talk about police should not be bullying or harassing reporters? >> reporter: it was a very strange
