and i am so proud of loyola university of chicago for doing that. i encourage other schools to offer the same opportunities for these extraordinary daca students to continue to be part of america. the second person i want to mention is a hero that is of a special nature. she was tragically missing from low ola campus this last weekend. her name is arianna preston. on sunday, she was set to receive their masters of jurisprudence from loyola school of law, but just days before her graduation ceremony, she was shot and killed outside of her home, right as she was returning home from a late shift on patrol. officer preston was one of the best of chicago. at only 24 years of age, she severned the police department for three years and during her time on the force, she worked to build trust between law enforcement and the communities she served. officer preston was inspired to become a police officer after making a trip to europe as part of her undergraduate criminality studies. her class visited former concentration camps in germany and poland, the sites

she's a professor of law at loyola law school and host of passing judgment podcast. to talk about what they got. >> there's still a long way to go, and it's an understatement to say that we are going to be witnessing a very fractured washington, d.c. vote on this. the house i think we're going to need significant support from democrats in order to pass this because basically both sides of the parties, the extremes on both sides are not happy with what they see. and in the senate the same thing. so in this case i think what democrats are going to say is we kept the house in order, there will not be big cuts to major -- excuse me, to major federal programs. and i think republicans will say we ended up implementing a freeze on spending, and that is a big deal. now, again, we have to see what happens before june 5th because it's not a sure thing. >> yeah, i also wanted to ask you we talk about wins and losses, the debt ceiling won't come up again until after the 2024 election. that's got to be a big win for the president because we can all imagine the ransom demands in a

a lawyer at the loyola law school. jessica, good to have you with us. the u.s. debt ceiling is all anyone has been talking about in washington and around the world. the house is voting is on this on wednesday. what's the first hurdle they need to overcome? >> they need to get enough votes. i think the real question mark here will be what happens to the freedom kah caucus on the right what happens to the democratic party on the left. and if there are significant defections. i think that will give us an indication of basically how good a job kevin mccarthy, the speaker of the house has done, in terms of rallying his troops, and how many democratic votes are needed here. because he said, i think we have a deal, one would guess that he could count. having said that, this is a speaker with 15 rounds before he got that job. so, i don't think we should assume that anything is a done deal. >> we can't assume anything is a done deal. what do you think will placate the democrats and the most hawkish republicans? >> probably nothing. and i don't think they're needed. there

michael genovese, he is a political analyst analyst and president of the global policy institute at loyola marymount university. a pleasure to have you with us. >> thanks. >> we are just nine days away from america possibly defaulting on its national debt. if president biden and kevin mccarthy cannot strike a deal to raise the debt limit, we are hearing that progress was made in those talks on monday, but it is still only nine days to make a deal, have it written as a bill, and passed through both the house and senate, by june 1st. is that even possible at this juncture? >> we are cutting it down to the wire and things are getting tense in washington because both sides are far apart. they are aware of the seriousness but that does not mean they will make a deal. this is unusual, because it is a manufactured crisis. since 1960, we have raised the debt ceiling over 90 times, under democrats and republicans with little debate and controversy. we did it three times during the trump years, so, why now? what is the magic of now that we are coming to this crisis that could, send us over a cliff.

jessica levinson is a professor of law at loyola law school and host to the passing judgment podcast, she joins me now from los angeles. great to have you with us. >> it is good to be back. >> president biden returned from the g7 summit with the debt ceiling looming, he will meet with house speaker mccarthy in the coming hours in an effort to make a deal before the country defaults on the national debt and plunges his country into an economic crisis on june 1st, so how likely is it that they can make a deal and get it through congress with that very tight timeframe? >> i still think it is likely, and there is nothing motivational like a timeline that is very real. and i think it is not an overstatement to say that there would be an economic catastrophe if we default on our debt, it will be hugely harmful to americans and it would hit people very directly in their pocketbook, there would be an enormous number of federal employees that will be heard, there would be potentially be runs on banks and it would do, really tremendously harmful things to the housing market. only to name a few,
