[ applause ] >> good morning. thank you, john, and also harold and pat and all the folks who moved mountains to get this thing going with us in person today. you are going to keep hearing that. it shows you how much we value other human beings in our lives. this a great thing we are doing here. thank you for inviting me to speak about lincoln the foundk and america worth saving. last year i published a book on lincoln and the american founding, and i argued that there was no greater influence on lincoln statesmanship than the leading men and especially the leading ideas that shaped america's revolution and our early constitutional formation. simply put, if they had bumper stickers for the horse and buggy back in lincoln's day, his carriage would say, i heart the american founding. this is an actual photo. but the idea of getting right with the founders was not unique to lincoln. in fact, the two main alternatives to the republican party touring the 1860 presidential campaign and ensuing secession winter appealed t

. >> as part of the lincoln forum's annual meeting in gettysburg pennsylvania historian lucas morel argued abraham lincoln was greatly influenced by his reading of documents and papers of the founding fathers . here's a portion of his speech . >> where douglas was emphatic in reading blacks out of the declaration of independence lincoln believed its principles did in fact apply to black people. it applied to all people everywhere. edited by douglas to stray from its original commitment to human equality, america was becoming a country that lincoln no longer recognized. so he called upon what he said was our ancient faith. to guide the country back to its noblest ideals. practices. looking back to the founders, couldn't have been more relevant to the crisis the nation faced in the 1850s. but appealing to the founders was something stephen douglas also did. he was not only lincoln's met nemesis but also the leading democrat and therefore the leading politician in america throughout the 1850s. douglas claimed he knew better than lincoln what the founders thought about the question of slavery.
