cnn's lucy cavanaugh is over at the denver airport. how bad is the travel picture today? >> reporter: yeah, i mean, this is what no fun at all looks like, wolf. you can see the massive line of people at the southwest check-in counter. i want to pan over here. the line continues. it goes all the way down this corridor, around the corridor, wrapping around where the tsa pre-check line in. a lot of the people here have been here for hours, if not days. southwest is responsible for many of the cancellations here at denver airport. in fact, denver has seen more than 450 canceled flights today, the bulk of those 411 coming from southwest airlines. and that is just denver. the national travel picture also just as bad. it's having cascading effects. we're talking about nationwide more than 3,600 cancellations, nearly 2,700 of those coming from southwest airlines. more than 6,000 flight delays across the nation. and this is a source of immense frustration, as you can imagine, to passengers who not only have to wait on those insanely long lines. i want to pan over once again to sho

cnn's lucy cavanaugh is in denver with the slight warmup there. temperatures went from the negative 20s to at least the teens, but it's still dangerously cold where you are even for a city like denver. >> that's right, jake. i'm regretting my decision to leave ply gloves in the car. it's still pretty cold here. you can see behind me things are slowly returning back to normal. people are out in the street again. there's a much braver gentleman without a warm coat behind me. the stow snow has been plowed. the windchill making things painful but we are now actually anticipating a christmas warmup after this brutal cold front. we do still expect a windchill advisory tonight for the far northeastern plains, but again, the worst is very much over. thursday bitter temperatures nearly set the record for the coldest day in denver's history since records were kept. it was a dramatic 75 degree temperature swing from a high of 50 degrees on wednesday when i was out in the streets to minus 24 on thursday morning. the windchill making us feel even more painful
