nbc's lucy kafanov is in london with the latest. lucy? >> good evening, jose. this is obviously a developing situation, but we understand that a vehicle, a white van plowed into a crowd of people on london bridge. british police have said that they have deployed multiple resources to handle this incident. we've seen footage of ambulances rushing to the scene, armed police on location securing the area, helicopters flying overhead. there are reports of a number of injuries, including one witness who told reuters she saw three people with apparent knife wounds on london bridge. this has not been independently verified by nbc news, but this incident did take place at a busy time here in london, about 10:53 p.m. local time, an area that would have been full of people on a busy saturday night, enjoying the restaurants, the night life, we're also learning at this hour that british armed police responded to an incident at a nearby bolo market in addition to london bridge. we don't have any more details oen that but authorities obviously take nothing chances. this inci

nbc's lucy kafanov is live in london with more. lucy, how is this virus working? >> reporter: good morning, frances. this is a ransomware attack, which is a type of virus that basically blocks access to a computer and then demands money to release it. so when a computer in this case is infected, the ransomware encrypts important documents and files and then demands a ransom, typically in bitcoin for a digital key to unlock those files. and if the victims haven't backed up their material, they either basically have to pay this ransom or face losing everything, so this could be very devastating for companies. this particular attack has been crippling computers worldwide. europe is affected. ukraine and russia appear to have been hardest hit in this attack. in kiev, we saw atms stop workinnd manually monitor radiation at the old chernobyl nuclear plant when their computers failed. in the united states, it's including one that owns food brands oreo and nabisco. there is a company, heritage valley health care system, which runs hospitals and care facilities in pittur h

nbc's lucy kafanov is in london for us. lucy, what more do we know? >> reporter: good morning. the russians claim on may 28th, 30 high-level isis commanders and about 300 fighters gathered to plot their escape from raqqa, the group's de facto capitol in syria, also a city currently under assault by the u.s. and its allies. the russian defense ministry claims baghdadi was at this meeting, and dispatched a group of bombers and fighter jets to strike the gathering. in a statement the russian defense ministry said, quote, isis leader abu bakr al baghdadi also attended the meeting and was killed in this air strikes. the ministry adds that it had warned the u.s. of the strike in advance. there's been no confirmation from the americans. a spokesman for the u.s. dough ligs fighting isis could not confirm whether baghdadi had been killed. there were numerous reports of his death including last weekend when syrian state television announced he was killed by an american strike. he was only seen publicly once, back in june 2014 in mosul when his fighters captured the city. this would be a

nbc's lucy kafanov is monitoring the situation from our london office. lucy, what do we know?rter: one person had apparently been counted twice. this is still being called the greatest wildfire tragedy in recent years, certainly one of the deadliest. there are several fires still blazing as we speak. please believe one fire began last night when lightning struck a tree during a dry thunderstorm, 120 miles north of lisbon. the fire spreading very quickly, engulfing the area, surrounding the nearby town. it appears many of the victims, at least 30 of them according to authorities, burned to death in their cars as they were trying to escape, their vehicles engulfed by flames on a small road between two of the smaller towns nearby in this very mountainous region. firefighting crews are struggling to cope, the fire described as very violent in at least two of its four fronts. the portuguese prime minister is saying crews were having some difficulty in even reaching some of these areas because these fires have been so intense. they've deployed soldiers to help the 700 firefighters b

we continue our coverage of the terror nbc neu ews lucy kafanov. >> and she's live with the latest onhe investigation. lucy, good morning to you. >> reporter: >> reporter: authorities have been conducting raids in a series of properties in the barkley neighborhood. this is about 30 minutes frarp where i am. we're close to the london bridge where the vehicle ran over pedestrians and also borough market where the three success peblgtss ran with large knives and attacked people. they did not give us more specifics, but this is in connection to the attack last night. we don't know the identity of the attackers themselves or whether programs importantly they belong to a terrorist network. they are trying to figure out the motivation and who else they were involved with and most importantly whether there were any accomplices. >> and we know that the attackers were taken down within minutes. what are police crediting that to? >> reporter: item minutes to be exact. authorities say that they have been ready, the threat level has been about at a vir, so they have been training for these scenari

nbc's lucy kafanov is monitoring the situation. lucy, what do we know?being called the greatest tragedy in recent years in this country. police believe a fire started when lightning struck a tree about 20 miles north of lisbon, that fire traveling very quickly, engulfing the nearby town of petro grande. many people were burned as they tried to flee. the flames engulfed the area between two smaller towns. crews are still struggling to cope, the fire very violent in at least two of its four fronts. portugal police say crews were having trouble approaching the area because the fire was so intense, and they've deployed 260 soldiers to help the 70 firefighters already battling the blaze. this is very much an ongoing situation, the european commission now getting involved in working with the eu states to bring in help from the outside. a spanish-fighting aircraft already assisting on sunday morning and another one expected to arrive later in the day. france is also sending some aircrafts and portugal declaring three days of national mourning for the victims in

joining us from london, lucy kafanov. what are we learning about more of them? >> reporter: you're right to point out the growing question of whether authorities could have done more to prevent this. not only was one of the attackers known to authorities here but he was, as you say, featured in a television documentary about radical islamist groups here in the uk. khurum butt, the 27-year-old pakistani british born citizen was known to police and domestic intelligence agencies, mi-5. he was part of a group, a fairly well known radical group on the fringes of british society, one that believes in a caliphate. he was featured in a film about british jihadis shown praying around a black islamist flag at a park here in 2015. he was also apparently reported on an anti-terrorism hot line in 2015. we don't know as much about the other attacker, rachid redouane, the other man who's been named, other than as you pointed out, that he was 30 years old and claimed both libyan and moroccan heritage. a lot of tough questions. authorities say they have 20,000 radical individua

nbc news foreign correspondent lucy kafanov joins us. what kind of impact are those recent attacks having on the election? >> reporter: good morning. polls just opened over three hours ago. it's difficult to predict how terrorism fears will impact the election. it is the second most important issue here, after health care, according to one recent survey. some believe it poses a challenge to theresa may because she oversaw police cuts. in the last day of campaigning we saw the prime minister switch to a brexit pitch, saying her conservative party would build a stronger, fairer and more prosperous britain. jeremy corbin framing this election as a choice between hope or fear. this was going to be a rather bothering election in april when theresa may announced the snap election by then. she thought and the party thought a landslide victory would give her the mandate for the upcoming brexit talks. they want a clean break from the eu. labor party is likely to keep some ties. for the ordinary voters here it's very much about security, bread and
