lucy kafanov. thank you. let's turn to entertainment law attorney, david albert pierce who has dealt with many film sets. the more we learn about the case, the more red flags pop up. there will clearly be civil liability for the production company or for individuals. do you see criminal exposure here? >> there could be criminal exposure in terms of negligent homicide. the amount of gross negligence that seems to be reported is really jaw dropping. i don't think the average american public understands how truly extraordinary this is on a normal film set and the level of safety precautions. >> what's the most stunning thing you've heard because we keep getting new information every day. >> i tell you, cnn has an employee handbook, i have an employee handbook. every company in america has an employee handbook that says you don't bring guns in the workplace. the fact that during off time, they're shooting at cans, whatever happened to marathon games of gin rummy. you have a problem, you don't toy with the prop. t

cnn's lucy kafanov joins us live from that vigil. so what is the scene like there, lucy? >> reporter: hey there, pam. people have been trickling in. again this is a gathering to honor and mourn the passing of 42-year-old halyna hutchins who was a rising star by all accounts in the film industry. she lived in los angeles with her husband and her young son. she was born in ukraine, and we're, you know, seeing people walk around with candles. it's still early yet. we're waiting for the vigil to get under way, but a lot of grief and a lot of unanswered questions about how this could have taken place, how this tragedy could have taken place because there are usually so many safety precautions on film sets to prevent this kind of thing from happening. now, you mentioned the aft. we are getting more details about the time line of how all of this unfolded. we understand that it was early afternoon on thursday. alec baldwin was wearing his western clothing for the shoot of this film. he was inside a structure with the film crew getting ready to film his scene. we understand there

cnn's lucy kafanov is in new mexico with more on the new search warrant. lucy, what are crow lyou learni about it? >> reporter: we know from the press conference that at least three people handled the gun that was used in that accidental shooting, alec baldwin, rehearsing for the scene when the gun went off, hannah gutierrez reid, the head armorer in charge of safety, and assistant director david halls who earlier according to an affidavit shouted cold gun when bringing the weapon to mr. baldwin which should have indicated it was safe to use. in the newly released search warrant i should say the deputy on the scene describes conversations with halls and gutierrez. these are not exact transcripts. these are the conversations ass deputy remembers them but in his interview with halls, i'm going to read you a portion, it says during an interview with david halls when the detective asked david about the safety protocol on set in regards to firearms, he advised i check the barrel for obstructions. most of the time there's no live fire, and she, referring to hanna

cnn's lucy kafanov is in santa fe where the investigation is under way. lucy, what more are you learning? >> reporter: well, fred, authorities have not filed any charges, they're still investigating. we know based on an affidavit released by authorities that they have seized all of the electronic material on that set. you can imagine it must have a lot. there's film cameras, phones, ipads, anything digital that might give them more clues about how all of this went down. a lot of interesting facts coming out through that affidavit that help us sort of piece together the timeline of how these tragic events unfolded. we understand, you know, thursday afternoon, early thursday afternoon, alec baldwin was on the set of this western movie, "rust," he was dressed in his old western clothing. this was an 1880s period western film. now authorities say that alec baldwin was inside that church looking structure on set. the assistant director was outside of that building. he grabbed one of three prop weapons that was laid out by the head armer on a cart outside of the

lucy kafanov, cnn, santa fe, new mexico. >> steve wolf is a theatrical firearms safety expert, and heoins me now. we're going to try and rewind on all of this, but just so we kind of explain how this could have happened. first off, what is a prop gun? is it really just a real gun, and how could it possibly kill someone? does it mean that it must have had live ammunition in it? >> so the definition in hollywood of a prop is anything that an actor touches. i touch my cell phone on-camera, now it's a prop phone. this is different when it comes to firearms. if i touch any gun, then that just became a prop. but a prop gun, in quotes, per se, is a gun that's been modified so it cannot fire live ammunition. if i were to take live ammunition, try to put it inside this gun, look at that. i'm saved by the gun, right? now, if i take an identical-looking gun that is not a prop gun, it looks the same, right? look at that. live ammo goes in it. so very important to distinguish between a gun that's being used in a prop, and a gun that's been modified so that it cannot have live ammo introduced into

lucy kafanov, cnn, santa fe, new mexico. >>> earlier i asked chad hawthorne, a firearms safety coordinator, what types of guns are typically used on movie sets and if it is common for prop guns to fire live ammunition. here he is. >> prop guns take all shapes and sizes. there are rubber stunt versions that you might use with a performer falling off a roof or running down the street or dropping the prop. that would be made of rubber. then we get up to the type of prop guns that are manufactured to only shoot blanks. they were never real guns. we call them nonguns. they are still dangerous because a blank is a charge of powder that propels hot gas, burning gas, burning powder out of the muzzle and we want to make sure that nobody is ever right down range from that muzzle. on another extreme, there is sometimes the use of a real firearm that have been converted in some cases to fire blank rounds so that they will cycle a blank round, not having the actual projectile in the cartridge. you don't get the pressures needed to cycle. but for those guns that don't require the cycling of the round li

cnn's lucy kafanov is on the scene in new mexico. we are starting to learn more about the two crew members who handled the gun, the film's assistant director and the armorer. that's obviously going to be important in all of this. what can you share? >> reporter: absolutely, jim. and the reason that they are important is because they appear to be the last people who handled the weapon before alec baldwin. walked it inside, handed it to mr. baldwin shouting "cold gun," which meant it wasn't loaded with anything that was harmful. sources tell cnn that david halls was actually accused of safety violations on previous productions, at least two productions that took place back in 2019. they were things like, for example, violating pyrotechnic and gun safety rules, consistently blocking fire lanes and exit. also some questions about inappropriate sexual behavior. i want to at least read you a quote from one of the sources who spoke to cnn. she is a pyrotechnician who worked with halls on hulu's production of "into the dark" series. he faile
