san luis obispo grew out of the mission. >> this is mission san luis obispo, found in 1772 by -- you will see the statue at all 21 of the missions am even those he didn't start. this is one of the ones he started in night -- in 1772. he surveyed the area and picked the perfect spot. a few blocks over from here, not here. he picked this location during a drought. it was in between two creeks and didn't realize how high the water got. the first water -- building was destroyed by a flood. the second building a built a block over from here, and it was lacking one of the iconic features of the mission. look at the roof. you have buyer titles. roof,her one was a fast attacks by neighboring it of americans in 1776, burned to the ground and got the order to rebuild a third mission. third that was constructed. look at this building, you notice a crack kind of belltower. that is where the reconstructed belltower meets the old original structure. the original belltower was torn down in the 1890's and reconstructed in the 1930's. this is a concrete and brick belltower, and the original structure

announcer: located 10 miles from san luis obispo, we traveled to avila beach to see the point san luis lighthouse. >> the town of avila beach, right over here, is pretty much a case study of the entire state of california. not only do we have native liveds, the chumash, who out here for 10,000 years, we also have a spanish mission, which is what the town of san luis obispo was built around. avila beach was the entrance to and from that town when people would come by the sea. the importance of the town of avila beach stems from the 1870's, when a lot of the piers were constructed. the hartford peer is still open today. it allowed steamships from san francisco, los angeles, anywhere in the world to come into our harbor. they could bring people, supplies. a good example of that type of commerce is that the early missions here would sell tallow and hides from cattle. you had small sailing ships coming from boston. they would pick up those hides and bring them back to boston and make shoes out of it. you have people in boston wearing shoes made from leather that came from the central coast.

his tombstone in the san luis obispo cemetery, he died when he was 49. it shows a man's hand and a woman's hand clasping. my hunch was this is a family man and a man who did not want to raise his children in a place that was so incredibly violent. that, i think, was his fundamental motivation. you have to admit, he accomplished what he set out to accomplish. he broke up the powers gang. i think one of the reasons i write books, i grew up in a rural area. we sometimes think our hometown is not that important to the scheme of things. in my books, what i attempt to do is to link san luis obispo county to the great events of american history. in this case as somebody who grew up in the wild westerns, we were every bit as much a part of the wild west as any of the guys i idolize when i was a kid. so, i think that reminding people of that, that there is something that is colorful and valuable and unique that people may not know about. most people come to this plaza and enjoy the day and have no idea that five men were hanged here in 1858. yeah, it is a little

the northern end of san luis bay. we were operational by 1890. this is the point san luis lighthouse. it is a two-story, very victorian structure. constructed in the winter of 1889, operational by 1890. one of the things we like to show on our tour is the level of construction craftsmanship. you have this ash bannister made by hand on the site. on the property. you have the crown molding which we opted not to repaint here, just to show how beautiful the craftsmanship was. this is the nonprofit group who manages this site and overseas restoration efforts. they were originally a volunteer group in the early 1990's. they came out here and saw the structure and that it needed love and help. after the coast guard automated the station out here, they boarded up the windows and left. what happened is volunteers came out, saw a building in need, and decided they would restore it. all sorts of foundational repair, raising funds to pay just for the genre construction. even from some of the images, this is what we're looking at
