brian. >> and luke russert, some real conciliatory wording about a respected minority. quote, i believe a greater clarity between us can lead to greater charity among us. how long can that last, luke? >> that's a good question, brian, because paul ryan is going to have to deal with two adversarial forces. obviously you have the house democrats, who have been very weary of paul ryan since he put forward his budget that significantly altered medicare and social security. they ran ads against paul ryan during that 2012 election saying that he was effectively pushing grandma over a cliff. then he has to deal with the conservative flank in his own conference that he really made overtures to today, i thought, by saying that he's going to go through the committee process regular order. we'll see. i was struck by the top of his remarks when he implored both parties to pray for each other. he's going to be the third catholic speaker in a row, after pelosi and boehner, and he does have a lot of positive feelings towards him from house democrats because they have always respected

luke? >> reporter: hey, brian, i'm here with charlie dent, republican from pennsylvania, definitely more moderate. what happened today? >> it's pretty obvious what happened. members wanted to take down john boehner, i always said would try to frag the next guy. they just did it to kevin mccarthy. kevin mccarthy had a strong majority of votes among the house republican conference. did he have 180 votes or something closer to 210 votes. he did not have 218 votes. the concern was that if kevin were to go on the house floor, present himself as a speaker candidate, that he failed to get 218 points and would obviously be embarrassed and humiliated. i think that's what largely drove this decision today. i didn't speak to him prior, i didn't know he was going to do this. i was just as shocked as anyone. but the challenge for our conference is quite simple. we need to assemble bipartisan coalitions to pass any important legislation around here. we may have to assemble a bipartisan coalition to elect the next speaker of the house of representatives. >> reporter: that would be a wild development. let's talk

luke? >> reporter: hi there, brian. developing news.house gop conference. he got the support of over -- actually, 200 of the colleagues on the dot. 43 went with longshot candidate daniel webster. of course, he was the individual who was endorsed by the freedom caucus. now, it's interesting to see how many of these 43 peel away from webster tomorrow on the house floor. one of the conditions that paul ryan set forward to become speaker is he wanted a robust majority of his conference. somewhere in the neighborhood of 235 or 240 votes to show that the conference united, no longer distracted by the divisions under john boehner. we expect a lot of those votes to go to ryan on the house floor. the freedom caucus usually votes as a block after an endorsement and perhaps still consternation ahead of the vote if the 43 go ahead, that would be problematic. we don't expect that and something to be written about. paul ryan will move forward as the gop nominee. expected to win on the house floor tomorrow. pay attention to that number. if there is on

brian todd, i think the average age was 38. thank you so much. joining me now on the phone we have lukempqua community college. luke, thanks for calling in. you were in a building nearby during the shooting. what did you see? what did you hear? >> i was in the building across -- i was in lockwood hall. it's straight across. i actually didn't hear any gunshots. someone had come in and told us that something was going on so they locked us down. we did not exit the building until the douglas county officers came and escorted us out. and they had us stay in single file line with our hands above our head. and when they got there they had four lines and each one searched and had us in the waiting like a staging area. and as we passed by we could see where the shooting took place. you could see some blood on the ground where they had like it marked out. we didn't actually see any like any people injured. they'd already removed them at the time. >> and my understanding from what we've heard is that the shooting took place in the science building and snyder hall, is that your understanding as we

luke russert is standing by with us. in plain english, why is boehner leaving and what has changed around him since he's been in congress? >> well, interestingly enough, brianhner has had to deal with a conservative flank in his conference. it's been very angry at him and said he hasn't done enough for the konconservative cause. he's always been puzzled why the pitchforks come out for him but he harkens back to an older legislation. he says he likes to get things done like the budget deal passed yesterday which will give paul ryan, his successor, peace avoiding what could avoid the most treacherous path for ryan. boehner is somebody who at age 65 has sort of outlived where the house gop has gone as a party. they have gone much further to the right. they want to see much more confrontation with the white house. almost in the frame of what ted cruz does over on the senate side and came to a point where he no longer felt he could governor the conference on a day to day, meaning that there's a risk, a motion to vacate the chair, where members could unify on the house floor, 218 of his conference to save him. he didn't know he had those votes. 40, 50 or so could
