one of my favorite letters in the whole section of the exhibit is from lula murray. she wrote to the president in 1923. she's from birmingham, alabama. and she writes to say that she was turned away when she went to register to vote, but that she should have the right to vote under the 14th, 15th and the 19th amendments. it's the only letter in all the research i did for this exhibit where i found an african-american woman who mentioned all the constitutional amendments that extend her voting rights. she also further goes on to say that she had two brothers that served during world war i, one of whom lost his life in service to his country, and she's urging the president to help her get this important act of justice. and i love this little pamphlet right next to lula marie's letter because it so clearly outlines a number of the different voting restrictions that were used in the south to keep african-americans from exercising their right to vote. i'll just read off what they have listed here. it says the poll taps, white primaries, inaccessibility of the polls, restr
