it was 33 degrees on saturday evening and it dropped back down. 22 in gaithersburg. 27 in luray is 28. everybody remains below freezing. when you look at the wind chill factor out there we have teens at 4:00 in the afternoon and we are talking temperatures that are well lower than the average temperature for the day. the good news now the clouds and radar showing you it's dry. so other than the biting cold, you don't have to worry about the snow potential tonight. it's in the 20's as you make your way out the door for the evening rush. you need to layer up. one of the big problems we're dealing with because of the cold snap is the water mains breaking. maybe some of you have been dealing with that around your house. tom roussey is out live at just one of them in silver spring on new hampshire avenue. how are you out there, man? tom: ah, i'm all right but man, the water mains are not. this is just one of them. there are so many throughout the d.c. area. this one, though, wreaking some of the most havoc. this is on new hampshire avenue in silver spr check out what it is doing to traffic

we're starting to see clearing skies. 38 in culpepper, 37 out towards luray. 41 in gaithersburg. so, a cool night tonight, but not all that cold. our average low is 29 in the city. i don't think we'll even get that low so we'll be a little bit above average for low temperatures. no rain to speak about, but look at the wide pattern here. nothing going on in the middle part of the country. this has been the pattern here. very dry across -- really the entire country except for the northwest. look at the southwest. these are the mudslides towards california and that moisture is coming our way. it has been cold on the east, it has been warm and dry towards the west. again, cold and dry for us, extremely dry. t though. more of a pacific flow. that means parts of california, they are seeing that mudslide coming in. now that same system will make its way our way and create very warm air for us. let's time it out. here's the storm system today as it moves on through. by thursday it's in the middle part of the country bringing some rain, beneficial rain to them, too. watch what it does for

normally dry in the yellow, frederick, hagerstown, winchester, luray.oderate drought conditions in and around the d.c. metro area. if we don't see any rain between now and midnight on thursday, it will go down as one of the driest winters so far through that date in 121 years. that's amazing, from december 1st through thursday would be one of the driest ever in our area thanks to capital climate for putting that out there for us. 44 degrees on wednesday, 57 degrees on thursday. i don't expect rain until right after midnight on thursday and then here it comes friday morning into friday night. not a wash out on friday, but 62 degrees for a high. that's going to be a pretty nice afternoon temperature wise. but more rain friday night into early saturday. that's about the bulk of the rain comes in. and behind that system, boy, it gets cold again. 34 on sunday, 30 degrees on monday, and, yes, maybe a chance of a little snow in the middle of next week. >> 30s, we can handle 30s. >> not scared of 30 any more, after t no, we can brave 30. >> thank you, doug. >>
