martin luther king jr. day and the bay area and the nation are marking the civil rights leader legacy with parades, rallies and festivals. the freedom train pulled into san francisco this morning carrying more than 1000 passengers. the trip started in san jose, commemorates the 54-mile march on selma back in 1965 led by civil rights leader dr. king. this cal train ride is now the only official freedom ride in the country. ticket sales was slow this year. a last minute rush had organizers promising that the train will roll again. >> all throughout the civil rights movement, people were saying we're going to ride the freedom train. now it's something, a lot of kids these day, they have to see it to learn it. >> in richmond, hundreds of volunteers spent the day participating in a coastal clean up. the event was part of the national day of service honoring dr. king. the watershed project organizers had originally planned for about 60 volunteers. they were happily overwhelmed when more than 200 people showed up.

also taking martin luther king's message to heart. turning a day off into a day of service. >> welcome back. protests of racial and economic discrimination is growing in brazil. one of rio de janeiro's most upscale malls had to shut its doors in the light of protests. maria is here with dramatic video. >> that's right. rollesino, no shopping, 6,000 youth invade a shopping maul in sao paulo. these have gotten so big, pushing odown the escalators, one guy here is trying to escape. look at this video, where they are also going after them with batons. the same day police used tear gas and they also used rubber bullets to take these thousands of kids out of these malls. now i'll tell you that this has highlighted social and racial divides. it is often urban youths that are going into upscale malls. i spoke to maria, one of the organizers, people have arrested people already and they are prohibiting youth from going into the malls, not allowing the teens to go in without adults now. richelle. >> all right maria inez, thank you very much so
