and what did some of that -- some of that tension ended up focusing on martin luther king himself, right? what was the problem with people and king? what was going on there? >> he was in kind of a sophomore slump after montgomery. >> it had been going on for some time, right? here he has the success in montgomery in what year? starts in '55. when does it end? oh. it ends in late 1956. and you know that. you know it. and you just got frozen by tv cameras being in the same room. but it wasn't just -- if it's a sophomore slump, it would have been '57. but nothing much happened in '57. and then '58 which could have been a junior slump and '59, a senior slump and still not much was going on with martin luther king and the sclc. he missed the boat on the sit-ins at first. and what happened at the freedom ride in '61? he didn't go, right? and the young people wanted him to go. and he refused. and some people thought that he was a little full of himself, right? and a little too afraid for his own personal safety. and some of that stuff came about also in albany in 1962 where king would fly in an

martin luther king transformed david vann. he was a pretty good guy to start, but martin luther king transformed him. i have never seen a city deal as well with the complicated history or any place. here's the 16th street baptist church. you see the sign up there, top right. this is in the middle of the demonstrations. this is during the children's march. when the children's march started because all of the kids gathered in the church and then came down the stairs to the park across the street. kelly ingram park. here's the church again today. so you see the white church, this is a different part of town. this is the southside baptist church. this is the white church. big enough? it's like a city block, right? here's another one. you can't quite see the whole thing, but you see that dome? this is the sanctuary. this thing with the enormous dome on it. so here's kelly ingram park which didn't have any signs back in 1963. it's been completely relandscaped. so this is on one corner right across from the church. and those words ar

but in talking with persons who were close to king at the time, they said martin luther king, jr., was eager to get to chapel to listen to thurman as he preached on sunday mornings. so there is this sort of intaking that's going on also with king as well as when you read much of king. you can hear so many of thurman's themes being residence nant in king's writing. and here king is starting to list people from the 20th century. he lists howard thurman. it says something about the significance of thurman but this conversation we are having is bringing forth the importance of the multiple influences upon thurman. we mentioned mortechai johnson. a figure who is lost to a lot of scholarship in a sad way. i think thurman's perspective on jesus is a tremendous contribution toward community toward which we are working and is extremely difficult for many christians to embrace, because for many christians, thurman's perspective seems outside the bounds of christianidehristiani. there are many who appreciate what they see to be the cristology in terms of establishing community with a christian id

by the way, bobby kennedy was not speaking at the funeral of martin luther king. he was at a different location. i don't remember who spoke at the funeral, but i'm sure it wasn't him. you know, it was just -- the assassinations were just more, you know, fodder on the fire. it was just more -- just added to the confusion. it was really a sad year. >> let me follow-up and underscore that point, brittany, because the speech you heard was the evening of april 4th, the night that martin luther king was assassinated in memphis, tennessee. bobby kennedy was at a rally in indianapolis. he announced to the gathering who had not heard yet that martin luther king was assassinated and died. that's why we wanted to show you that. there were other people that sfoek that evening as well, and certainly the president, lyndon johnson, attended the funeral services for martin luther king in atlanta, georgia. those remarks were the evening he was assassinated. let's go to one more moment and we'll go to george mason from the convention speech. this is the acceptance speech by senator
