they had one meeting where they had asked martin luther king to bring other members of the civil rights movement luminaries together to speak with him and he was shocked at how they spoke to him. >> you know, that's a very interesting story. king was not there, but robert kennedy -- robert kennedy is a complicated guy and on one hand he hated to be called a liberal and he hated to think he was some squishy, soft sentimental guy in the thought that blacks were not entitled to any kind of special treatment in a grown up in the household were civil rights had never been discussed any sort of was proud of all that. and yet, he was very curious about what luck america was thinking if you wanted to exchange ideas. he was open-minded and his own way. so he met with james baldwin and he asked james baldwin to organize a meeting where he could exchange ideas with black intellectuals and baldwin arranged for several of them to meet at joe kennedy's apartment in manhattan. harry belafonte was there. various other members of the black intelligentsia were at this meeting. they all started dumping on
