pepperdine university has confirmed multiple students were at the bar when this happened. california lutherana 10 minute drive away. again 11 in the bar were killed and 20 others were injured. some were injured by broken glass as people jumped out the window to escape. the 12th killed was a ventura county sheriff's sergeant. >> he went through the front door and he was struck multiple times with gunfire. the highway patrol officer stepped back and secure the perimeter until additional units arrived. he rescued the sheriff's sergeant out of the line of gunfire. >> sergeant ron heius died at the hospital. he was a 29 year veteran. they said he was planning on retiring next year. he leaves behind a wife and son. police say the shooter used a smoke device before opening fire and he used a 45 caliber handgun. they believe he was the sole perpetrator and they are not looking for additional suspect. the sheriff's department has set up a family unification center nearby the shooting and they also set up a hotline for anyone trying to locate loved ones. we have the number on the screen -- 805-465-6650
