the defense attorneys filed a petition in may of 2023 seeking a new trial for erik and and lyle menendezxual abuse claims and should be considered by the court. the lawyers said the new evidence includes a 1988 letter that erik sent to his cousin just months before the brothers killed their parents. they say in that letter erik said he had been sexually abused by his father. but yesterday los angeles county d.a. nathan hochman if announced that his office opposes the motion filed for a new trial. he said most of what was included in the request with for a new trial had already been rejected in the other courts. he also a shared his doubts on the validity of the new evidence presented by the defense. >> is this credible evidence? we argue in many different ways it is not credible evidence. if this letter there truly existed, the defense counsel would have of absolutely used it at the trial, because it would have helped corroborate both erik menendez's testimony and his cousin's testimony about sexual abuse. >> reporter: the t.a. also -- d.a. also addressed those sexual abuse claims. take
