lynda konecny joins me live exclusively. great to see you, lynda. >> thank you for having me. >> i know that you feel like you are more protected many states away from your son even though he's on a military base. in what way? >> well, for one thing, i can defend myself at my home and i'm confident that people around me in my community are also armed. >> and so when you heard that there was another situation going on at fort hood, as a mom of a son who lives there, what was going through your mind? >> panic, absolute panic. when they were naming the buildings that things were happening at, i knew where my son was at. i didn't know when they were talking at what point of them taking people out at gunpoint out of the buildings whether my son was one of them or not. >> so you're asking a question like this, why do we train, arm and send our military men and women off to war but when they come home to the bases, we don't? have you received an answer about that? >> not one that i'm satisfied with, no. i've received answers that, some people are armed on the bases, there are provisions in place. but i think there needs to be more security as i've said in other interviews. at least two armed guards per building on every military installation. >> there was another soldier who was in the middle of this shooting rampage last week who took to facebook. and he wrote something like this -- he said, it's my god-given right to arm myself. i only could lie prostrate on the ground and wait to die. i remember telling myself, oh, well, this is it. can your son and can you relate to that? >> i can understand because that was what i thought my son was probably going through at the same time, yes. >> so what are you asking congress to do? what do you want them to do? >> i want them to go revisit the original draft of that -- that was a directive in 1992 that was passed through the clinton administration. look at the language of that bill, strengthening it, more identify what's considered a hazardous area. in my thinking, it's every building on a military installation. because of the world we live in now. >> what has your son said to you in the week that's passed since this latest incident happened? >> he's very glad that i'm coming forward and speaking out against the status quo. that wasn't his word. it's mine. >> lyndaease keep us up to date if anything does change and you hear anything back from members of congress. >> i definitely will. thank you. >> thank you. >>> it's time now to turn it over to shepard smith reporting live from the fox news desk. he's going to cover this memorial service for fox at fort hood, texas. >> thank you, gretchen. the president and first lady are walking to the side of the memorial service which is scheduled to begin within the next couple of moments at fort hood army post. a ceremony to honor the men who died not in combat but at the hands of a fellow soldier. a gunman killed three people as you've been reporting. wounded 16 others at last week's shooting rampage. the president being seated. the national anthem is to follow. this is going to be a tough service for everyone there. but just as it was some 4 1/2 years ago, but i remember that day and the way we all came together in this newsroom that day, the way that americans come together especially around our militar
