m. night shyamalan discusses his latest book at the national press club. he suggested ways that parents and teachers could enhance the educational experience and close the engagement gap. m. night shyamalan and his wife started a foundation that gives scholarships to inner-city students. this is just under an hour. [applause] >> thank you very much for having me. that was a gracious introduction. this jumping between two lives is hard. at the end of the day in the editing room. we just had a screening. and, you've got to go to washington, d.c. tomorrow. i went home and look at my notes. if i'm a little sluggish, forgive me for a second. let me start by saying that celebrity activists make my stomach cringe. you don't automatically get the right to have or give advice on something because you were successful at something else. that makes no sense. but you do have the spotlight on you sometimes, and it gets blurred. in my case, it is something i'm really sensitive about. it's not something -- i have always graciously said no to being asked to be promoting thi

m. night shyamalan, it will be a year ago this fall since your book came out. how is it helping to change the education landscape for minorities? it is amazing to answer this question. we cannot handle the amount of opportunities that have come from the book. we have had states and cities and everything saying, we want to use what you have laid out in the book. help us write legislation. talk to our congress. it has been an incredible thing. thought i would go back to making films. you guys now take the data and do that stuff. i'm finding myself in the middle of these conversations, both here and d.c. and in all the different states and cities. we are having a big conversation in philadelphia, how to isolate in legislation these schools. this,ly someone will ask seven percent of united states schools are low income suburban schools. does this apply to those seven percent? this is my guess, yes. the data is not related to that. i cannot say to you categorically yes. my guess is yes. you would get the same type of results. this is about the inner-city low income
