by the way, prior to graduating from m.i.t., i had been at the university for a short stay, to studytle japanese, and i got a scholarship to study in japan. the overseas training program, it was called. and that changed my life. being hit with this totally different culture. i had traveled to europe, but i had never experienced anything like japan. at that time i said to myself, i want to come back her i want to understand more about this culture. i started doing research in japan, in korea, in thailand, in malaysia. i spent a year in korea. i spent another year in thailand doing the survey research. then i went to work for monsanto in hong kong. david: it sounds like you started out with an emphasis on asia. mark: oh, definitely. david: was it that it was that different from the united states? mark: it was totally different. the culture was different. you must remember, in those days, korea was just recovering from the korean war, and thailand, the same thing. the development that took place. the vietnam war was taking place at the time i was living in thailand. i could see what was

there was a software developed by m.i.t. to do the landing.basically started the digital revolution. came out of that program. another thing i learned about, on facebook, friend of mine, i came out of the video industry, friend of mine, an engineer said the original data tapes were lost. they were streaming data back from the camera on the lunar craft. they looked bad, they had to take that data, convert it to a signal at the time. but the original data tapes he said were lost. i said i seem to recall they found those tapes. what happened was the tapes, nasa decided to sell a copy of tapes in 1976 at a surplus sale, some nasa intern bought those tapes. come to find out, they were the original tapes the guy bought. >> they're being auctioned off at sotheby's today in new york. they're expected to fetch about a million dollars in fact. why were you convinced the moon would happen? >> i was an 18-year-old kid. thought for sure, i didn't see any reason how we would fail. >> that's theron in georgia. daniel in tennessee. good morning. >> good morni
