so the m.t.a. staff heard both of our constituencies needs and interests and came up with a solution. there's already some actions where two groups are working together and i want to try to help to break down the stereotypes. in the late 1990 is when i was a chair of the task force we had a person with an obvious disability and people talk about that people with disabilities don't bike, she said, yes, she did and she's had a kid and since then she and her kid bicycle, so even then we got an education of our own, against our own bias. and further the east band of the bay bridge is named after a senior who is a long-time bicycle advocate and that happened after he was 75 and he's still doing it after 80. so i'm trying to say that there are real people from our joint constituencies who do bicycle. but to get back to the 17th street project it's a protected bicycle lane and that is one of the problems. san francisco is a-typical for its bike coalition advocacy and the problems start at the top. there's

it is a program that the m.t.a.eam had to compete against other jurisdictions and the fact that they were able to win the grant shows how compelling what we're doing here in san francisco and how important it is to moving people, not just here locally but really in our region. so, we want to be doing more of that. i am so honored to be representing san francisco in the legislature. we see what's happeninging in washington that very little is getting done. the exact opposite is happening in san francisco. every day we're trying to make a difference on transit, on housing. ed mentioned the ballot measure. we hope to bring to people next june to raise tolls which i know are never popular. but that is going to pay for $5 billion worth of projects. that is going to help bring high-speed rail into the cal train station, into the downtown station right there. it is going to be a huge winch it is going to be more money for muni in that particular project. so, again, that's where this money come fr.s it comes from the voters

so i really hope that, you know, m.t.a. or any other city agency would not partner with someone that is -- that owns a company that is basically discriminating against people with disabilities. that's number one. and the second comment has to do with the hop on/hop off buses and other privately operated tourist type buses. i have written to several of those, and probably half of them are not accessible. and, you know, i have written to m.p.a. and so forth and basically been told -- and i think to m.o.d. a while ago that, you know, s.f. has no jurisdiction and that's california p.u.c., well, again, as the san francisco allows those buses to park, in fact, gives them designated parking spaces and there's other forms of leverage they have. and so even though there may be gaps and there are gaps i believe in the a.d.a., in terms of the coverage of those type of buses, i think that, again, that san francisco has some practical effective leverage in making those companies go beyond what the law may require and, certainly, if it's

so they are beginning to work on that effort and, certainly, san francisco, the m.t.a. is on record as having supported that, and i would note that looking back four years it was one particular element that was added by our board and that was to include provisions for low-income placard holders and that would still be something that this body and others who -- when there is legislation may want to consider advocating for. so there was in the past legislative session an attempt to advance a similar proposal that would have involved meter payment. at that time, the bill did not move and so -- what happened instead was that the legislature recommended that the state auditor's office do an audit on how the d.m.v. runs its program. one of the buckets in which we look to for reform is how is the program administered now and how can that work better and so that analyst audit or that state audit came out with a set of recommendations. those recommendations were, included in sfb-611, signed into law by the governor and really seeks to reform some of the aspects of how the d.m.v.
