and macarthur was a different man. he was -- i'm not going to steal james' thunder here, but he was a man of destiny. he knew it. eisenhower did not have that sense of destiny. he had the same level of ambition macarthur did, but his humility and his comportment was far different. but they worked together well because what melded them together was this shared sense of duty. macarthur's sense of duty was just as high, and when push came to shove, duty dictated what they did next. personal or professional issues, anything else went immediately to the wayside and there was only a focus on duty, the highest accolade of a soldier. and i think that is what made them work so well together and that is where they understood each other. and the fact that eisenhower spent seven years with douglas macarthur in various assignments is a testimony to that sense of loyalty and dedication. and i think that certainly was significant later on. of course, just before the war starts, eisenhower is working for george c marshall. so marshall
