[explosions] vanfleet replaced ridgway, who replaced macarthur. u.n. forces almost one year after north korea's miscalculation, a tactical stalemate developed at the 38th parallel. a new phase of the war was at hand. ♪ in the early summer of 1951, the communist world let it known that a cease-fire and truce were possible. they stipulated that kaesong be the site for exploratory talks. the u.n. found kaesong to be a hostile north korean propaganda show. a location closer to the 38th parallel became the compromise choice. for two years, exploratory talks numbering 250 five sessions went on, and so did the fighting. [explosions] ♪ ♪ [explosions] ♪ another winter in korea passed. combat became limited but bloody, ravaging the already scarred korean landscape and producing isolated battles of now famous legend and during which acts of heroism became just as legendary. ♪ [explosions] ♪ [explosions] ♪ finally, in april, 1953, pow's, sick and wounded, were exchanged as part of operation little switch. expectations for a meaningful cease-fire spread around

, douglas macarthur's father. he was in the civil war, received the metal of honor, stayed in the army, was not a west point graduate but was a proven professional, really a fine soldier. the americans again building up troops in the philippines. meanwhile, the philippines had been involved in a number of insurrections, the most recent to couple of years earlier, 1896. so the spanish in effect bought off the filipino leadership. they offered them money and other concessions if they would move into exile. the leader of this group was a guy named amelio aguinaldo. aguinaldo was around forever, and my graduate advisor interviewed aguinaldo in 1960. he was still around in 1960. that is a long time to be in a single position. so aguinaldo took the money, didn't distribute it, stowed it away in the bank and was waiting to buy weapons to go back to the philippines for their independence. aguinaldo began communicating with the american ambassador in singapore, he thought they struck a deal, the american ambassador set if

so macarthur, general macarthur in tokyo flew him over in a plane to take over in south korea, but heas very impetuous and turned out very ruthless leader. and became very unpopular with the people who had to work with him, the politicians and members of the national assembly. it's interesting that there was an election just before the north korean invasion. an election in south korea, that put the opposition in power i the national assembly, and they would have stripped rhee of some of his power. but the invasion in effect saved rhee. and rhee maintained a lot of popular popularity among the people. because of his insistence on total reunification. and late in the war, as the americans beginning in mid-1951, the americans were negotiating for an armistice with the chinese and the north koreans. by 1953, rhee was so furious over this impending armistice that he began pulling stunts that would try to sabotage the talks. for example, freeing thousands of north korean prisoners in the south who declared they wanted to stay in the south, and this put fury in the northerners and chinese. s
