one thing we know about amazon and jeff bezos as well as jeff mackey, they think long-term and want toess for the long term. the right thing to do for the long-term might essentially be to take margins down and allow whole foods that cover to do that as part of a bigger organization. that would allow them to right back against income grocery stars, take some market share back -- how?: how do they spend the money? is that their problem, that they have not been investing? how do they take the share back when everyone is now offering organics, for example? >> there are a couple of ways they could do it. you're bringing a membership business to a physical store, similar to costco. so now prime members, and there is a 60% overlap between prime members and whole foods customers, and you might be able to get a discount shopping at whole foods if you are a prime member, for example, they could cut margins on certain products, increased private label, which has been very important for all who -- whole foods and amazon. that would allow you to then lower prices and other areas of the business. t

nbc news correspondent janice mackey-fryar joins us live from japan where that ship is now docked. janice, investigators questioning how a large cargo ship like that strikes a u.s. navy destroyer. >> well, this is the central question being explored by no fewer than three investigations. how is it that an advanced u.s. warship with sophisticated communications equipment that was functioning at the time in clear weather was able to collide with a container ship more than three times its size. japanese investigation every investigators are interviewing the crews of the filipino flag carrier as well as the crew aboard the u.s.s. fitzgerald, and, of course, the u.s. navy will be conducting its own investigations. the commanding officer of the ship bryce benson had to be airlifted from the destroyer after the crash. he suffered a head injury. he has been released from hospital today. he will be -- form a central part of answering some of these questions. this is also a time for healing. this is a very tight navy community. they are mourning the loss of seven sailors after what the vice

nbc's janice mackey frayer is live with more on that.anice, do we know how this happened, how the accident occurred? >> well, this is the question. they're going to be looking at a number of different aspects in this investigation. first of all, the merchant ship, the containership about three times the weight of the u.s.s. fitzgerald flying the filipino flag made a sudden u-turn about 25 minutes before this collision occurred. this according to marine traffic records. nobody is sure why. and also on the part of the fitzgerald how is it that an advanced warship with sophisticated communications technology collides with another ship on a calm night when there wasn't any bad weather? so they're going to be looking at a number of different aspects in this investigation, but of course the focus right now is trying to determine the whereabouts and the well-being of those seven missing sailors. the u.s.s. fitzgerald was towed back to port. it has limited propulsion, it has significant damage to the forward starboard side. it also experienced s

janis mackey frayer joining us. any indication of a possible motive? >> reporter: police are saying it was a robbery, that the suspect walked into the casino, stole gambling chips, shot at a television, took a bottle of fuel from his backpack, poured it on the tables and lit them on fire. this of course caused panic in the casino and the adjoining hotel. people thought it was under attack by militants, so it triggered a stampede. that's how people were injured. there were people jumping from second floor balconies. police are emphasizing this is not a terrorist-related attack. they're saying the gunman did not shoot at anybody and he did not appear to want to kill anybody. but it was hours after authorities had declared the incident that they made this terrible discovery of dozens of bodies, guests and hotel workers in the chaos were trying to find a place to lock down, to take cover because they believed the hotel and casino were being stormed by militants. there's still some confusion, a few contradictions in this as well. manila police being very fi

nbc's janis mackey frayer is live in japan with more.ood morning. >> reporter: good morning, hallie. the uss fitzgerald took a huge hit and heavy damage to an area with berthing spaces where other 100 sailors were asleep at the time of the collision. there was a lot of water and not a lot of time. it was described as a traumatic situation, as the entire crew had to fight to save the ship from sinking. it took 16 hours to tow it to port, where divers were able to access those damaged areas and where they found the remains of the sailors who had been reported missing. the seventh fleet allowed us to visit the port today to take a look at the ship from a distance. from what we saw, the starboard side was crushed. there was a huge gash near the keel of the ship, and apparently the damage below the water line is even worse. what caused the collision is the focus of at least three investigations. the acx crystal, the container ship involved, was making a routine voyage to tokyo, but then it made a sudden u-turn about 25 minutes before the coll
