because the people of the state of florida have something great educator and civil rights leader mary macleodrepresent our dynamic and diverse state, first to be represented by a black american and national statuary hall. the doctor epitomizes the values that we hold dear industrial, thirst for education, desire to build peace among people, she devoted her life to equal rights and service, service to presidents but to students, women, veterans in the everyday americans. we lift her up today at a time of competing ideology to help heal and unify through her example because she also lived at a time of division but determined to stand out to the voices including the ku klux klan to do what many say cannot be done. when blacks were denied education she built a school, denied medical care, she built a hospital, when the world was grappling with authoritarianism she helped establish the foundational commitment to human rights through the united nation. her spirit is captured in this beautiful sculpture by neil of floridahe people with the help of nancy and the statuary. note the cap and gown and bo

mary jane macleod attended grade schools in sumter county south carolina before graduating from the collegehools she had attended. she became a social worker in savannah, georgia, before becoming a teacher in augusta georgia.. she returned to sumter to teach at kendall institute, and married fellow teacher alberto bethune. they subsequently moved to florida where she found what is now bethune-cookman university whose 77th 77th commencemes honored to keynote several weeks ago and become a wildcat. she was active in the national council colored women's and girls clubs but found them to be too docile. her activism led her to the founding of the national council of negro women currently headed by doctor thelma dailey, a graduate of bowie state university. my late mother was a loyal and enthusiastic fan of this trailblazing leader, and insisted that i learned everything i could about her. it was partly as a tribute to my mother that i lobbied governor john charles west to support placing a portrait of mary mcleod bethune in the south carolina state capitol building. on july 10, 1976, ms. bethune
