so the macon island can go fast.ut this ship also comes with an electric motor that can be used at slower speeds. less fuel is burned. >> on the trip that we took coming from pascagoula where the ship was built, to san diego, we saved over $3 million worth of fuel. >> reporter: a $3 million savings is the kind of payday the navy was hoping to see when it launched the ship earlier this year replacing the old steam engine technology. it has other benefits, too. >> our ship actually produces about 200,000 gallons of water per day with our reverse osmosis unit which is another part of the hybrid propulsionsystem. >> reporter: the navy thinks the extra water could come in handy on this vessel. the ship carries around 3,000 military personnel. it's also a floating hospital that can treat up to 200 people a time on board and thousands more off ship. the uss macon island could be used to respond to a disaster like an earthquake. still, the cost of this new technology is a burning question. >> even if the technology up front

as you may know, this past thursday, when the uss macon island was here, part of the commitment to fleet week was to get all of us first responders together aboard the ship, and we have all of the major generals -- general hon from the navy, admiral brown from the u.s. coast guard mason brown. we had a general from the marine corps as well as their deputies. we had region 94 -- 9 for fema. we have the heads of departments of emergency services at the state and local level, and it was an incredible gathering of people who speak one language, which is disaster response. so that was really terrific. then, the st. francis yacht club hosted all of the military brass for the freight the ships, which they did as a donation, so it has been an outpouring of enthusiasm. the reviews are incredible. lastly, i would say that thanks to sydney and michael, we were presented by admiral hunt of the navy this tremendous plaque, so things are looking really good for fleet week. if you add that on to the great work of the san francisco giants and all the cruise ships we had in court last week, it has been a

kron 4 jeff bush gives you a tour of the uss macon island. >> we started off at sfo early in the morning0 minute helicopter ride pass both bridges and out to see there was the make an island. the ship is the commission for less than a year in its impressive thing to be aboard it's a mobile helicopter launching pad but it does a lot more. is that the design to sank, not releasing but the back and drops down in the water so it can launch big boats like this one. in fact it can carry two of these boats but look what else it carries. these are tanks used by the marines and the float. the primary mission of the macon island is to get marines to battle quickly but it's perfect for a humanitarian disaster like an earthquake. the ship can produce 200,000 gal. of fresh water a day. it also has a state of the art medical facility there are six fully functional operating rooms, a dentist's office in 15 bed i c u. all this is powered by hybrid power plants the navy said dissension will save the government approximately $250 million for the next 40 years. on board to make an island kron 4 news. >> he
