one analyst says get ready for macy's and nord strom stocks to drop. joins us now, joan, welcome to the show. nice to speak with you today. >> thank you. good afternoon. >> you have what amounts to the only sell ratings op macy's on the street. why did you make it? >> essentially we're at a point now where the retailers overall the department stores are coming under pressure from areas from a market share standpoint. you know, the rollout of off price and traditional off price being a big one. you've seen traditional off pricers expand their stores by 850 units, since 2009. and at the same time you've seen department stores closing their full price offerings. we think with that in mind macy's has been working on competing against some of the factors rolling out their omni channel strategy a business, they do about $1 billion in sales via on-line business fulfilled by other stores. it is a margin dilutive business at this point. makes it difficult for them to leverage expenses more so than previously. they need a 2% comp to leverage the expenses and it'

lundgren decides to move on from macy's.at's something that is very important for us to notice and i think we might have more information coming for you in a moment but three big things for macy's there. >> any indication of price for blue berkmercury? >> $200 million. >> wow. what do you think -- court, you know the blue mercury as a chain. people probably used to seeing it maybe in some retail locations. what do you think of the fit this creates for macy's? >> it's interesting and i think what macy's has done really well is aggregated very very strong brands. blue mercury is in and of itself an aggregator of brands in some way because they sell multiple different cosmetics lines and so i think that's something that does somewhat fit with macy's. remember jcpenney has sephora locations in many of its stores which has done very very well for it. so it's an interesting fit. i think macy's has made a lot of smart decisions with the brands they acquire or partner with. >> courtney reagan at headquarters. thank you. a little bit

macy's next week. >> basically, certain poshgts of the consumer is strong and nothing to dao with gasrices. >> to the extent that gas prices have something to do with it, i think it's lagging for sure. it takes some time for people to accumulate and realize they have more money in their pocket. nordstrom as an sexample is nota name that pops to mind. the average nordstrom shopper, no. kohl's a different matter, and macy's somewhere in the middle. >> of course we're talking about stocks and record high. we have the s&p and dow at record highs. >> the rth has exploded, xrt is very steep. this particular subset, there are only three stocks in the s&p 500 so-called department store index, this has been a laggard, macy's down 10% from january. it's a great bet it catches up, does what kohl's did and catches up. >> i would add one more point. they had a lot of news in the last couple of months. they made an acquisition, reiterated 2014 guidance, said comps were good. it really comes down to guidance. what nordstrom is telling you today is the stock could still advance with the downgrade in

macy's, somewhere in the middle.ting, trade at a low valuation. >> and stocks and record high, the wealth effect is here with the dow and record today. >> the xrt is steam. the issue, this particular subset. three stocks in the s&p 500 so-called department store index, and knithis has bln a laggard. macy's down from the january high. can catches up did what kohl's did and catches up with the group. >> a lot of news in the last couple months. seen their ceo. reiterated 2014 guidance, said q 4 comps were good. comes down to guidance. nordstrom is telling you, stock could advance with a down grade and expected earnings growth of 11%, nordstrom's trades about 20 times less expected gross. to me, this sets up as a good trade next week. >> what is the trade? >> today the stock 63.25, looked to march, bought 65, 67.5 pay spread. bought one of the march 65 calms for 90 cents. sold a march 67.5 calls at 30 cents against it. the trade, break even up at 65.60 and selling that 67.5 call down about 1 point, 10% from there. sets u

. >>> next up, macy's getting hit today. the retailer getting nir inting with an underwait rating and price target, initiating on hudson bay with an equal weight and $27 target, barclays downgrading nordstrom. the target remaining 60 bucks a share. macy's, karen, is the one you care about. they say valuation. >> it was a hazing actually, i thought. you know, it was -- i thought overdone. i think they were looking for a $55 price target which to me if it comes near where they say on earnings, it's just a ridicul s ridiculously cheap multiple. i don't agree. this makes horse races. the other thing, though, fossil news tonight also not fantastic for macy's. still valuation here, i like it. >> who likes macy's? >> not this guy. >> i like macy's but wonder if it's limited upside at this stage, after the monstrous move it made up toward 68 and pulled back this move down here. i think there's other names that have better exposure -- >> such as? >> i'd go with the athletic gear, underarmor, nike, lulu, al three of these. >> i like u

macy's at monroeville mall east of pittsburgh. randy gyllenhaal has more on this breaking news story. >> three people shot inside this mall just east of pittsburgh. according to witnesses, they say the shooting happened outside of the macy's department store tonight. multiple gunshots were heard. shoppers took off running to the parking lot. at least two victims were taken to the hospital in critical condition. a third person was injured. police had to lock down the hospital until the suspected shooter was caught. at a news conference police said this was not random. it was a targeted shooting and two of the victims were innocent bystanders. they have a person of interest in mind. witnesses say they frantically ran out of that macy's store for help. >> people started running. someone has a gun or shooting something like that. we started hearing sirens police cars started showing up. >> this same mall was the scene of a massive fight, a brawl breaking out in december. hundreds of teenagers involved. police say it started on social

i like macy's. >> technically when you look at macy's, it's this 50-day moving average.ust as tim said, they're a great operator. they always have vendors over a barrel. everyone who deals with macy's always says they have a better negotiating point than the other department stores. kohl's stores seems to me a little bit of a break out method here. it's very volatile, but to me it looks like it wants to go higher. >> a big day of gains today ahead of earnings. on thursday, the company saying it will begin to sell its advertising product that promoted tweet outside of twitter, blocking in partnerships with flip board and yahoo japan. and tim actually bought into twitter today. >> i think if you look at where the street is lined up for this, and i think the buy side is a little higher than the sell side on this. but 460 in revenues is something i think they're going to be. we've already gotten downward guidance from the company. i think that's largely in the price. 2015, the comps look okay. 14, a good season. why did i buy it? i think it's a company that's starting to hit

we will talk to the ceo of macy's, terry lundgren. ♪ >> will to "market makers."'m out steel. macy's has boosted its full-year forecast for what it calls a strengthening trend. macy's has agreed to buy blue mercury. on the phone with us now is terry lundgren. thank you for joining us today. i would like to start on your acquisition. $210 million for blue mercury. why did you decide to make this purchase now? >> this is a new channel of distribution for macy's in a category we know very well and consider a strength of hours. we are in the ute business in a big way. -- we are in the beauty business in a big way. it attracts a different customer that we do not normally get in the shopping mall. staying with our core strength but a new avenue of growth. >> what part of this was to compete with jcpenney? so for a, very popular. >> this company is much more focused on higher end and much more focused on a high service level of business with the brands they carry. it is very customer touch business. they have 60 stores. very different in terms of where they are today in

shooting took place inside the macy's store. the mall was put on lockdown is the place searched for the shooter. it is not clear what led to the shooting. two cousins have been arrested and charged in a series of shootings into homes in stafford county. the 20-year-old and his 18-year-old cousin are in jail without bond. share's deputies say the past few weeks shots were fired into several homes in white oak. two residents were shot at in neighboring king george county. nobody was hurt in any of the incidents. a woman found dead inside of her condo died at the hands of her neighbor. officers found 61-year-old karen siegman at condominiums in a delphi with severe to her upper body. the police later arrested her neighbor, rudolph phelps sr. and charged him with murder. he is accused of murdering siegman after an argument. >> at thanksgiving, talk to them. real nice guy. the few times i met rudy. for him to do something like this, i'm shocked. >> phelps has a criminal record spanning four decades. the naval academy is providing gri

macy's did print 2.5 for the quarter.est beat for depot in 15 years and they're closing in on coke as the biggest market cap out of atlanta. >> great one. i know frank blake left the company in tremendous shape. a great ceo. following along the conference call brilliant, they break it down aisle by aisle. you hear what's better -- what did better what did even what did poorly a sign that maybe you've got to go by tanly works, whirlpool, maybe sherwin-williams, stay close to the conference call. let's not for get that nordstrom traded from 79 to 74 based on the head lean and finished at 81. those trading on macy's once again, you're trading on nothing. you are filled with sound and fury, signifying nothing until you hear the conference call. >> how could you not -- how could you find a better time to be a retailer in recent days? think about even the weather comparisons, we know it's the -- the weather's terrible in the northeast. a year ago the polar vortex didn't help anything. the comparisons not that hard. >> no. crack

the forecast -- macy's forecasts annual profits that missed estimates.e company's's earlier forecast to macy's is now relying less on deep discounts which helps profit margins but help -- makes it harder to get customers in the store. as a look at the stories we are following. target is out with earnings on wednesday and the retailers trying new initiatives to boost its numbers. among them, it is testing a new small format store in his home city. julie hyman went to minneapolis to investigate. ♪ >> they are called it boxes for reason. the average truck is -- and then there is the store. >> we will have sandwiches salad, beverages. people can buy one single roll of paper towels. you guys have a big section. a lot of college students, they need a tank top. twice this is target express. 85% smaller than a traditional target, it is about the size of your local pharmacy. >> areas where people live work, or where they go to school. >> just blocks from the university of minnesota campus target express caters to college students. >> when we have a home section,

they have macy's as sell.at nordstrom has to spend too much on omni channel, it looks like it's peaked out. they report thursday. so, a lot of people are saying this is a great domestic way to play things. terry lundgren macy's may not like blue mercury but the stock's not expensive. one to watch. be careful selling nordstrom because longer term a great plan of action new york city doing a slow rollout canada do have a good omni channel. i think the idea of blowing out a nordstrom mid screen is not a good one. >> what aboutplace? >> macy's doesn't have the growth that nordstrom has. it's not a good thing to bet against terry lundgren. >> no. >> nordstrom watch out. people are going to presume they know something thursday. they have been spending billions and the stock has done quite well. they did blowout the quarter a couple of times. and i don't expect a blowout this time but would not get rid of this. too good a retail. fits my domestic consumption story. >> right. where else do we want to go here on "mad d

olivia: you look at macy's and it is going gang busters. >> macy's is the top performer.ven macy's is showing weakness. their outlook for this year is only 1-2% growth. they are profitable but growth is something they are struggling with. brendan: one of the things we have been seeing is they are trying to figure out how to put smaller stores and higher traffic areas. do we have a sense of what the ideal footprint as for a store that sells general merchandise? >> basically if you look at target they are struggling for growth. they have stopped building big stores in the u.s. that looks like the future. an urban setting store that can go after purchases on a regular basis. >> the upside surprise from many retailers seems to be in the type of stores for people who show up, they spent less on gasoline and spend more in the stores. do you think that is a rational way to look at it? >> waited a story a couple weeks ago that retailers are expecting a boom from gas prices but they have not seen it yet. right now people are spending their gas savings on more gas, they are driving

macy's on tuesday. i think both will be benefitting from the recent cold snap as they clean out their winter inventory at a premium of what they thought they could sell it a few weeks ago. that's typical when they have to mark down the winter and bring in spring. that stuff is flying off the shelves. macy's should be fine. i bed dillard's which doesn't get enough credit for its turnaround will put out strong numbers. i like that company. is credit still too hard to get? is it the spike in home prices not sales has now passed? why don't let toll brothers tell us when they report tuesday morning. they are thorough in more than just their narrow splotch of the industry. we'll hear from home depot. i bet the ceo will talk about his predecessor and come up with nice numbers in a totally coherent conference call as we listen aisle by aisle what's selling better than planned. we could also have major news next tuesday getting report from valiant, the drug company. we'll announce a sale. if they do i'm telling
