she spoke with macy's chairman and ceo jeff kennett.was striking was the retail story when it comes to the consumer disparity. you have this massive income disparity. higher inflation. is macy's worried about that? caroline: he said that consumers are stronger than you might think. he did think about the headwinds affecting macy's purchases. let's talk but how you can see the consumer. they are wearing about the pressures. gas prices, food prices, wages. it is not keeping up with the pace of inflation. nevertheless, we are seeing disparity between the consumer that is purchasing at macy's still wanting to come and spend. that is why they are lowering their full year guidance, whether it is for sales, inventory back up. he spoke about the industrywide inventory. they will have to shift those. those home goods everyone got to and the pandemic era. the luxury buyer is still strong. this took me by surprise. you think about the earnings of $250,000. not yet affected by the pullback in stock prices. that is where he has spoken to the previou

macy's is kind of in the middle. so what do you expect? >> i think the best thing you can say about macy's is that the stock is cheap you know, it's less than 5 p/e, 3% yield it is definitely going to be a struggle for them in the near term i don't think there are any more skillful and agile than target inventory build is still pretty high i think it's going to be difficult for them to produce very attractive numbers this quarter. i do think there is an interesting punt here going forward, not just back to school, but if you sort of believe that the consumer has stabilized and perhaps maybe even willing to spend into the christmas season and they guide forward on that, i think that could be potential generally you think about macy's, it's been able to really roll with the punches over the long run the most attractive thing about it is that it is relatively cheap. so there's a chance here if you want to take a punt for 18-month trade, it could be a 50% upside just simply as the consumer stabilize and goes forward but ultimately that's reall

i think the macy's of the world are going to struggle.y: you were mentioning wages in the context of the consumer. i wonder about wages on the context -- in the context of the retailers and what they have to take place. what are your read on pressures on the labor side of the company? mark: there was tremendous pressure during covid to bring people back to work, to bring people on board. retail is a big piece of the waiver market, as you know. wage rates rose, benefits rose. also, pops and perks were reduced. by progressive retailers to attract and hold their workforce. it is an inflationary pressure when you get down to it, it makes the cost of doing business more challenging. it is out there. i think at the end of the day, retail is all about having great product in a setting customers enjoy shopping, whether online or in store. that requires a workforce that is committed to representing you. guy: great to catch up. useful insight, thanks for your time. mark cohen, retail business school director. coming up goldfield investors may be so

gap and nordstrom are going small and getting away from the malls macy's is accelerating its plans of smaller stores after market by macy's after a change following the pandemic, so are these retailers able to reinvent themselves and is it the end of an era let's bring in jan niffin. i do watch this fascinating and for those that don't follow retail's ins and outs perhaps as you and i might, explain to us why a retailer like macy's if they're seeing their sales fall and go more online don't just close their stores altogether or at least in kind, with the sales increases that they're seeing online why do you need stores at all? >> that's one of the best questions and macy's answered that when they started this closing prment and they said wow, we thought this business would go online when they close the store. not only did the people not take that business and put it on-line, but they reduced their purchases they were making online online sales went down and the store sales went away. they said wow! these people buy from us because they know the store is there and they buy a lot more f

what went so badly for norstrom that did not seem to go off that badly from macy's?early, macy's has done a good job coming into the quarter but hedging some of that downside. i think the expectation for nordstrom was that it was going to be not wired to the positive. i think some of the commentary that started to underpin that maybe the inflation pressures not just into the bottom end of the middle income range. that was probably the thing shaking people the most today was nordstrom specifically. guy: maybe this is a left-field question but related to the news we just got, if we see significant student loan forgiveness from the president today, would that be a positive for retailers? how would that work in terms of how quickly it would flow into the retailers? >> if this was the first mode of forgiveness, we would start to calculate but this is an extension of a multiyear forgiveness cycle and conversations so this just differs for a few more months. we were -- we won't really know whether this is going to be something more significant in terms of overall forgivenes

we heard from macy's which was better than feared c kohl's wasn't great.t has been a shopper that's been more insulated. we also know it had a big anniversary sale during the quarter that is likely going to give it a nice bump. of course when looking at the financial details of that you have to be careful with the timing for the year over year comparison, but it should have driven some traffic and interest into nordstrom and that's something some of the analysts are pointing to as a positive there, along with that higher income consumer still holding up when the company has done what they can to make sure they're not over stored or over square footage, if that's a word, looking at some of the smaller format locations, even those service centers and, so i expect them to talk a lot about how all of that is continuing to work together, but really, i think at the end of the day, it's just it is a consumer facing pressure from all directions still interested in paying for very discretionary goods, which is exactly where nordstrom plays. >> thanks. >>> jeff, oka

. >> karen, what you make of that, we saw macy's earlier, seems like a little nuance here, is not theame is it? >> it's a little confusing, macy's cited bloomingdales strings, you think they would be more similar to a nordstrom customer. the magnitude of the cut on the second half, taking a giant hit, for the next two quarters, sort of surprising given that the inventory is courtney said, it's really not so far out of line, they did say private label, really aggressive on price, which is bad for all the other retailers. i'm surprised how badly they missed here, not quite sure what exactly happened, i would've thought from macy's report that norstrom would've had a pretty decent corner. the guidance was week. >> the sales guidance wasn't that bad, if they don't have that much inventory to discount, why is the bottom line number so bad, they are not writing off like walmart and target, they had to discount so much inventory, are they telling us everything, they would tell us everything, would they karen?>> [ laughter ], i like to hear the call, how to the sound, was the body language, s

believe it or not, some consumer discretionary retailers, macys and dick's sporting good up higher. macys came in at a dollar a share andy's warned of consumer spending of the year and investors are piling in. also beating on earnings expectations, dick's raised full year guidance and ahead of earnings after the bell, nordstrom's hitching a ride on macys success and nordstroms better buy 2% on the deck after that quarterly report. ape, the preferred amc shares, which debuted and dumped out yesterday are soaring at this hour, just off session highs jumping 22.8% at this moment. still at $7.37, nowhere near the $10.50 high hit yesterday before they dove. amc shares not so lucky. there's red on the screen there. amc down 6.8% and it's not the meme stock's moment at this hour. bed bath and beyond down 4% and game stop lower by 2.25 and revlon down 2.25. crude enjoyed a very strong regular session and in the after market popping 3.5% and the big oil names and integrated oils and drillers and refiners are pumping higher now and you can see on the screen. big leader here is neighbor's indu

i think a 2023 with macy much better inflation numbers. -- we macy much better inflation numbers. tom: what does your experience tell you about the yield curve invasion and the time that lag between the inversion and when recession hits. bob: it is difficult comparing current circumstances with previous recessions. if we look at one from 2000, 2001, or 2008 to 2009, we had deeper sessions, a major contraction in economic activity, i don't think that is the case this time. we could have sustained period of low economic growth, that is consistent with forecast from the imf and the fed for next year. that implies yes we are going to have an inverted yield curve. the funds rate goes to 4%, it is entirely possible, i could see 10-year yield's around current levels. francine: how awful can the recession be? i think what ever indices are they looking at. they say there's something missing from the bond markets no matter what the cpi tells us. they do worry about the current state more than the market. bob: if we compare today with previous major recessions, from 2000 and 2008, we had sig
