we've got lowe's and macy's coming out tomorrow, giving us a further window into the p consumer. us is lpl financial chief global strategist, quincys crosby. also joining the conversation all morning long is mark tepper and lee carter. great to see everybody this morning. thank you for being here. quincy, kicking things off with you. how would assess the consumer right now as we wait to see these earnings from big retail? >> the consumer continues to spend, maria, albeit using credit cards a little bit more. we're seeing that and we're seeing some of the higher net worth consumers going in for necessities, for example, walmart, the dollar stores and maybe we'll see it at target but nonetheless consumers are buying houses, as they buy houses they're going to have to furnish those houses. we may see a little bit of an uptick with more of the durable goods that we had not seen for a while as we came out of the pandemic and started to experience travel again. maria: yeah. and yet the ging guidance has bn really tepid, the home depot guidance causing a huge selloff in that stock. what

lowe's, kohl's and dollar tree reporting on wednesday and then on thursday we'll get the number out of macy'sk ahead is sw retail advisors president and deal makers co-founder, stacy whidlat. what's your take on the consumer right now. what are you expecting from the numbers this week. >> maria, we have those january retail sales numbers which were super strong, they were up 6% year over year, almost in line really with inflation. so that was incredible ian occurring. and then a we had -- incredibly encouraging. we had walmart and home depot come out with disappointment. they are talking about a fizzle in the second half of the year. thats was a disappointment. there's an issue with the wholesale channel which is department stores, michael kors told us there is destocking going on in the channel. so that means we're still over-inventoried and the wholesale channel is trying to clear their inventory and get healthy so pain is not over yet. maria: yeah. i mean, we see an economy that is clearly slowing. if you look at the gdp numbers and the other metrics. but the spdr, s&p retail etf was down
