oliver: macy's is a good bellwether. there were a few factors that macy's at play. the negative impact of tourism as well as the port slowdown. whether it is a little bit colder towards the beginning of the quarter. that really do not incite consumers. we have an optimistic view going forward. we think that retailers who have a great omnicell focus in clicksting bricks plus can play a big role in driving the second half of the year. price of oilthe started to greater we had all of these equity strategist, near and doubled out on consumer discretionary, cheap gas is going to boost retail. it hasn't happened yet. why not? oliver: i think there is a lag effect in terms of the benefit coming through. gas had a lesser benefit is removed through the year but some all caps on numbers we see nationwide have held pretty steady and i think the unemployment levels, as we talked to ceo's around the country, are better than they thought. there are green shoots and i would stay on board with positive, cautiously optimistic view of the consumer. erik: oliver, question came up earl

macy quarter results miss. danaher's deal valued at almost $14 million and they're also splitting into two. big deals this morning. we'll start with dupont. something we've followed closely since it began. trion has owned the stock for quiet some time. dupont prevails. i was listening to others on squawk box who don't believe. how much efforts they've put into this and were very articulate arguments that they would win at least one seat going in perhaps as many as two. i would argue it's a win for dunopt here. whether it's a turning point for activism, we cannot say. very interesting to note that the index funds voted were dupont and again trion. have typically had a great deal of influence. they recommended where the index funds didn't listen to them. >> they decided to look at the long term performance and she had good long term performance. i think they will say the income wants deserve a shot. i would say this is a total stone wall but it wasn't. they listened. go back to the possibility of the high tide fo

macy's backstage.will start by opening up some stores, new york, this fall and then spread it out across the country after that. scottie, off-priced macy's stores. are they trying to do nordstrom's rack? >> i think that's what it is. it's helping to move some of the stuff they weren't able to sell instead of sitting in back of a storage closet somewhere. they're seeing what nordstrom's rack is doing. they're seeing we have bargain hunters today. they'll have to keep up the same kind of quality customer service you get from the macy's brand and keep the stores clean and organized. that may be more difficult. i'm upset they're starting these in new york. you need to go into the middle america if you want the bargain hunters. expand. >> i get that. i think they're really well-managed. i think they want their top management here in new york to be able to kind of roll this out where they can see it. i think macy's is a terrifically well-run company. they're talking about massive new investment in digital. o

macy's reports first quarter earnings before the bell.y're expected to post a slight increase in earnings per share. this after sales and profits in 2014 missed forecasts. joining us to discuss on what to expect from macy's is paul. research analyst at detsche bank. there's several external factors. weather and the strength of the dollar. despite these head winds do you think macy's can beat expectations? >> we're expecting a relatively in line print as you mentioned there were a number of hurdles of this first quarter. i could throw in an earlier easter as another factor that did impact first quarter sales results where macy's has been strong, however, over the years it's an amazing margin so we do expect them to have balance, slower sales with strong expense management and they have a great balance sheet that provides support to the bottom line typically through meaningful buy back activity. >> what are you expecting in terms of international sales? could that be a source of opportunity for macy's as it expands to other locations? >> ma
