madam speaker, madam chair, you remember 1994? we were members of this body, we worked for a whole, year a whole year, to put together and pass and assault weapons ban. the only reason it wasn't permanent was because we weren't able to get enough people, members, on the other side of the aisle, unfortunately, to go along with that. and so, the compromise was a ten-year ban on assault weapons, which expired in 2004. i'm just shocked that 18 years has gone by and its body has not moved to reestablish that. in 1999, as a president of the naacp, i filed suit against the gun industry. it took us three years to get to court because the nra did everything they could to keep it from not happening. finally, in 2003, we went to court and i testified in brooklyn, new york, for over a week. but we didn't have the weight we needed and the nra was a bigger force than we could deal with. and so, we lost that, but the judge, to his credit, said this does not prohibit the fact that there certainly will be other lawsuits like this. the nra heard th

madam speaker, i'll tell you something. as i watch what this january 6 committee has done, and the constant attack of president trump, here's what i find interesting. it wasn't too very long ago that chuck schumer stood with arable attacking the united states supreme court. and chuck schumer said, we're going to come upon you like justices kavanaugh and gorsuch, like the whirl wind. you will know, and he made threatening comments and guess what. last night there was an assassination attempt, a gentleman's been arrested for attempted murder on justice kavanaugh. and not a p.p.p., not a p.p.p. -- peep, not a peep from the president or nancy pelosi or anybody here. but you had a president who said, let's march peacefully up to the capitol. let's let them know you're here. let's fight for our rights. and somehow that's incitement. that's not incitement. but this committee that's there, mr. perry, representative perry, they don't care about the truth, they don't care about equity. and i don't even like to say that term, equity.
