he broke the story for the times along with maggie haberman. also joining us now, cnn political commentator david swerdlick. so much to talk about. jonathan, i need to get to you first because you co-wrote this article. president trump continues to harbor multiple conspiracy theories on everything from the "access hollywood" tape to the former president, his birth certificate, where he was born. let's start with the tape. after the inauguration, he asked a republican senator to investigate the tape. what else are you learning? >> well, that he's still talking about this. you know, this conversation with the senator that we report happened in january, but since then, the president has brought up with advisers in private his doubts about the authenticity of the "access hollywood" tape, which it's important to remind our listeners, our viewers, i should say, that in the hours after "the washington post" broke that story last fall, he confessed it was him and taped a video apology for his language on that tape. but this president has a long history

abc's maggie rulli live for us.'s turn now to former fbi agent steve gomez who gives us a little insight in what goes on in the investigation of an attack like this. >> is there anything to glean from the fact that he rented this truck from a home depot? >> yes. the fact is the home depot trucks are very large and powerful. they can plow through definitely bicyclists, people and smaller cars. as opposed to going and renting a car from hertz or a suv. those trucks are more attractive to terrorists looking to commit this type of attack. and it sounded like the deputy chief for nypd, jon miller, had even talked about how they had made these types of outreach contacts with like, say, home depot and the rental car companies to let them know, to look for people who are trying to rent vehicles such as this guy. this suspect here. >> and i just returned from the scene or near the scene. there's a good stretch of west side highway, manhattan, that is still sealed off. it doesn't appear they're picking up any evidence there.

maggie: frank pomeroy is the pastor. his daughter annabelle pomeroy was inside the church when 26-year-old gunman devin kelley opened fire. the shooter was able to fire off multiple rounds on his automatic weapon, killing at least 26. many children. some of young as 18 months. >> there were three firearms that have been recovered. maggie: authorities now believe the attack was fueled by a domestic dispute. >> the suspect's mother-in-law attended this church. we know that he had made threatening texts. maggie: kelley previously served a year in prison following court-martial on the assault on his spouse and their 11-month-old child. he discharge in 2014. the nature of the charge should have prevented him from obtaining weapon. authorities confirm kelley did not have a license to carry. for six weeks he was working as a manager at an r.v. park nearby. he left saturday from a headache and didn't show up on sunday. he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. witnesses here for the shooting describe the scene as horrific and
