joining us now to discuss, washington correspondent for the new york times maggie haberman.o see you. >> good morning. >> so what do you think about this indictment? it comes on the back of a lot of reporting you did that there are investigations into tom. how serious do you think these charges are? >> the charges themselves, john, i think are very serious and certainly the fact that he is kept in jail until monday. the prosecutors described him as a flight risk, that he was described by prosecutors as engaged in activity, alleged activity, they describe strikes at the heart of democracy. certainly these are serious charges. his lawyer said he will plead not guilty and is innocent is what they have said throughout this investigation. this investigation is something we first reported on, my colleagues and i did, back in december of 2018. there were two investigations going on. one is the eastern district of new york in brooklyn that is the investigation that resulted in this indictment. and this indictment relates tool gagss that tom was essentially lobbying former president

maggie, first to you.nt off signals saying this is no big deal, the indictments, it's just a partisan witch hunt. oh, nothing to see here. what's really going on behind the scenes? what is the real feeling among the president and his close advisers? >> look, john, you're going to continue to see the former president describe this as a witch hunt and describe this as a partisan investigation. part of that is going to be sigh vance. part of that is going to be because of the attorney general letitia james in new york that is working on this case with vance. in reality donald trump is not somebody who has sought to be indicted. he is not somebody who thought it was a good thing. there was spin from one of his advisers this week about how he was, quote/unquote, thrilled. he's not thrilled. i don't think he's throwing staplers, but he's not happy. it's not something he's talking about constantly as furry, but this is not where they want to be. this is a totally new world for him, john. and i think that what you

maggie, i mean if the former president actually believes that the election was stolen and that thesee to prove it, you would think he'd be using every single resource including the money that his supporters donated to him that he was asking them for in order to kind of fight these battles to uncover evidence, but he's not. >> you would, anderson. and you raise a key point, which is that he raised this money on this premise, that this was about fighting the election results he has repeatedly falsely claimed were the result of widespread fraud. but this is in keeping with who donald trump is. number one, he uses other peoples money when he can. he tries to have other people pay for things when he can. and two, he often tries to have other people do things for him. he tends to try to not have his direct fingerprints on things that might be controversial. some of this might be a strategic choice by him and candidly driven by the fact most of his advisers are not happy with his focus on these arizona efforts and his attempts to try to find similar efforts in other states or at least push

abc's maggie rulli is in london. >> reporter: tonight pope francis undergoing a scheduled surgery on his large intestine. the announcement of the pope's surgery coming as a surprise just hours after he delivered the noon prayer in st. peter's square. the holy see press office stating, the pope went to a local hospital in rome where he will undergo a scheduled surgery for a symptomatic diverticular stenosis of the colon. >> this was a scheduled operation, but if you look back at his medical history, it's something new. he's had other problems but not this one. it's obviously something that has taken people who know him by surprise. >> reporter: diverticulitis is a condition where pouches form along the digestive tract get inflamed and can lead to complications like obstruction, and experts say that surgery is nocommon. today's surgery is the first known hospital treatment for the pope since he was elected to the papacy in 2013. last sunday the 84-year-old pontiff may have been hinting at the planned procedure when he asked for special prayers for himself.
