nbc's maggie vespa is in hard-hit altadena for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. amid the welcome reprieve that you just talked about, scenes like this are becoming this eerie normal in the air. this was someone's home, someone's home, and skeletons of them left. also, that brick chimney standing isolated in the middle of theke this. the death toll standing at 27 this morning. as you point out, dozens missing. crews still go door-to-door looking for remains. that process keeping thousands of people in the area from their homes or what's left of their homes at this point. in the meantime, while the investigation into how these fires started continue, one utility company accused of starting one of them is speaking out. multiple lawsuits now with this one accusing so cal edison of the failure to deenergize power equipment with the winds gusting last week. that suit claims that started the deadly eaton fire. just an allegation. the international ceo speaking out to our liz kreutz about this. >> can you say with 100% certainty your equipment did not start the fire? >>

joining me now for an update on all of this is nbc's maggie vespa. status of the recovery efforts in california right now? >> yeah, melissa, the status is that basically they're progressing, which is really welcome news, as you can imagine, for the tens of thousands who are still under evacuation orders. in fact, here in this neighborhood in altadena, you can see we have electric and gas crews, including crews up on a cherry picker by that electrical line. and then others have been jackhammering here over on the side, basically trying to undergo utility repairs, get these rolling and get these neighborhoods safe enough so that people can just drive through them and hopefully come see their homes or what's left of their homes. in so many cases. we just got updates, actually, from the l.a. county sheriff that roughly 33,000 people between the areas burned by the palisades and the eaton fire remain under evacuation orders. that's down. get this from roughly 200,000 when it was at its peak. >> so down now to 33,000. >> so that's how much all of this is i
