maggie haberman, you want to understand the divide inside the republican party on the tea party way ofarty way of doing things, there it is in the ted cruz favorable rating. >> and there it is and the reason why ted cruz is not backing off of what he's doing. ted cruz campaigned against obama care and he is, you know, living that dream out and he's being very serious about it. he knows who his base is. he is very popular right now in texas. this is very positive for him. and his funds raising, one of the big thing with big donor, they'll say he's lost the big donors. he was never going to have those donors. this is insane. >> nick, let's go back to his race in texas. any conversation somebody wants to have with ted cruz as a major donor, ken langone was probably supporting david dewhurst, i don't know for sure, but all the big establishment guys were trying to stop ted cruz. cruz is going, you know, i owe you guys nothing. >> and maybe he's not running for president and perhaps it's for ag of texas, something where this is very helpful to him. as you point out, this is great for him wi

joining me now is joy reid and magg maggie haberman. fire brand for the right and i've heard this from people like james carville, you want to rile up an audience in the south, he's your man. he'll rile them up. and of course, nationally looking at the statistics, he's doubled his negatives in a brief time. doubling down and disliking the guy as soon as they know him. is he a winner or loser inside the republican party? >> i think you have to look at ted cruz as a rise of a tide we're seeing of lawmakers in washington who are running on their own brand. and he is not worried so much about the national party brand. his own, personal brand in his home state is pretty strong. his own personal brand among grassroots activists in the party is strong. what it has done to the national brand has not been positive. i don't think it's particularly of his concern. so i think for what he is worried about which i think is largely about his own image, i think that is going positively. he campaigned in terms of running on defunding obama care, getting

political senior reporter maggie haberman and new york times columnist nicholas kristof. nicholas, i'll start with you. the president is going to come out and say there's a problem, right. how should he describe what's happened so far? >> i think the white house should be much more frank about the scale of the problems. one of the problems is that they did have a disastrous rollout and there were other ways that they were late in acknowledging it and late in maybe recognizing the scale of it. and i think he needs to be more forthright about that. >> is that enough? >> well, i don't think there's that much more he can do except frantically try to repair it. he also has to distinguish between obama care itself, which i think is fundamentally sound and extraordinarily helpful to the country and the rollout of the website, which truly has been pretty disasterous. >> maggie, the "times" headline reads this, no more apologies, why obama has to get mad about his broken obama care websites. does it matter what he says as long as he gets it working? >> since i think the solutions
