let's start with exactly what a slate mailer is, and why is it even call thad. >> slate mailers, they're those oversized postcards and letters sent to the voters. there are two types, though, jessica, and that's what we need to be clear about. some are very legitimate such as when a political party sends out endorsements of their candidates after they've interviewed them. those are paid for by the party and vetted to candidates. >> there are two types? >> slate mailer companies, yes, companies, charge money to candidates for promoting their campaign. all somebody has to do is pay enough money, usually several thousand dollars and the slate will carry his or her name on a sheet. and in the slate usually comes as a guide, with an official-sounding name. take a look at this one, for example. the election digest, which sounds pretty official is sponsoring candidates for state and local offices, but it's really a bunch of democrats who have banded together to put their names on there. here's another one. it's called the budget watchdogs newsletter. which endorses mainly republicans and a coup

it is really a first step and a very easy way that in many aces has helped mailers move into a much broader mail stream. off based onck what they have learned by going online? >> i think that is the issue, they can take where they wanted to go to. it is saturation by mailing when they pick on the carrier route. moneyan save businesses as well. this becomes a lot more targeted. neighborhood mail is almost a way of describing. really gets focused on the area she tried to reach -- that it is tried to read. >> the post office has had fair success collaborating with others. we work extensively with the postal service. >> did they reach out to you yakke? >> my understanding is we had a best idea and to use with products as well. who reached out to who and that one? >> we reached out to the postal service initially. >> mr. cochran, do you find it you were pursued by businesses like mr. weissberg. >> it is very flattering. i think it is a recognition of the presence we have, the fact --h that we are at 153 doors 153 million doors today. we created a product that the regulator. a temporary product.

one of the things that we added a specific requirement for mailer and that is 300' radius was based on feedback that we got through the input process that many stakeholders feel comfortable with the process outlined by the planning department. so what we did was actually take that process and replicate it for these spaces that are under the jurisdiction of either dpw or real estate, but those notices wouldn't actually come from the planning department. they would come from either dpw or real estate and we're trying to build a mirror process under different jurisdictions. so we added three requests for types of noticing. one was for local residents. local property owners, and also the neighborhood groups. so that we could make sure that all stakeholders would have a vested interest in the space would get additional noticing. so we added that specifically to the administrative code amendments and are working on drafting into the public works code, which is the two types of plazas. >> thank you. >> commissioner antonini. >> thank you, i think this is excellent proposal and in my opinion l

direct outreach to the san francisco school district schools, so we use a few times a year, we do the mailers that go home on tuesday's or wednesdays to the students across the city. we do direct outreach to recreation centers and our facilities so we have our people walking outdoor to door making sure that the community is aware of what's going on. we have online calendars for special events. we promote on media. i don't know if you've seen our sftf bus ad that's encouraging those to sign up and we also use newspaper ads. just to sum advise what our goal is, obviously is to provide quality programs, have safe and clean open spaces this summer for kids and families to participate in. and then we rely on our customer and community feedback so we can improve the following year but as we go along, we can make improvements through the summer. we look to have productive partnerships. we're partnering with lots of folks and we continue to increase that number, and as a result our quality of what we're able to offer our department has gone up. if you have questions, i'll be willing to answer those.
