attacks prompted response from cantor, who insisted on his own immigration street cred, and put out mailers like this, bragging about he was the one stopping the obama/reid plan to give illegal aliens amnesty. all of which suggest that opposition to comprehensive immigration reform played a big role in yesterday's surprise result. but here's a fascinating bit of data from public policy polling, which happened to poll cantor's district yesterday, on primary election day. and with only 21% of respondents in this poll as self-identified democrats, the poll found strong bipartisan support, 64%, for the contours of the senate immigration reform bill that has already passed. the one eric cantor helped kill in the house. which gets at a fundamental truth about the politics of immigration. opposition is intensely focused among people who will make it their cause in life to go to the polls to vote against it, while support is widespread and diffuse. this is true within the republican party itself. a fascinating survey by the brookings institution looked at views on immigration among republicans, who

take immigration reform, he was sending out mailers in the last few weeks arguing he was anti-amnestyand anti-immigration in the race. and people just laughed at it because he had been in washington, d.c., making the public lines, always saying that immigration reform wasn't dead. floating the possibility of a dream act. when you do that, you begin to be called an insincere paul. i think that was a big problem for eric cantor last night. >> and al heim, we're going to richmond in a minute. but if you're going to do that, and newt talked about this last night, if you're for the dream act, then go home and hold town hall meetings. and tell people why you're for the dream act. and, say, hey, i do this all the time. you may not agree with me. but listen, here i am. i'm going to be here for two hours. let's talk about this. and you go across your district, 10, or 20 times by the end of it, people say i don't agree with him completely, but i understand where he's coming from. eric cantor never did that. >> no question, joe, he became out of touch. let me just address immigration for a secon

but i saw the mailers cantor's campaign to strip he did, and it was clear that he was opposed to immigration reform. he was promising to do everything he could to block it. that is unfortunate, and i think it is an open question whether or not the prospects for immigration reform's passage are enhanced by mr. mccarthy ascension to hire position of republican leadership. i know that there are many in mr. mccarthy district in california that strongly support immigration reform. that is not actually unique. there are a lot of people across struggling who are favor of comprehensive immigration reform. there are plenty of good economic reasons to support immigration reform. it has been found that there are hundreds of billions of dollars in deficit reduction over the next couple of decades that would be enjoyed by this country of immigration reform were to pass. again, this will have to be a decision that mr. mccarthy makes as he gets settled into an office in the capital. >> i know the vice president is in central america today. the white house and the dream act, comprehensive immigration reform
