this seems to be the biggest danger from this water main break. we found out the residents inside the wolfe senior center apartments, they had lost their water pressure. but the ut wahher department told me they redirected that water pressure so they're doing okay this morning. this is the problem. if that's flowing through the building, what damage is it doing? we'll find out as the morning goes on. as sam said, this started around 3:00 this morning. water gushing basically from the ground up, from 4th and howard from a 12-inch break. there are water crews here, fire crews here doing whatever we can to clean this thing up. the break has been pretty much capped. a little pressure in that pipe. the other area of concern, people losing water pressure or any other water issue, the bigger issue is the moscone center behind me. that is the problem because they've got to figure out what damage this is doing to the area and also cleaning up all this mess. 4th and howard is just dirt and mud. the intersection still closed down. if you need to get through

when the weather gets cold, water main breaks pop-up more frequently. is live and laurel with more on a developing story. the air temperature right now is 25 degrees. earlier today, a water main , a stonee in laurel throw from the laurel high school. the eastbound lanes are blocked off. muddy and murky. it runs from more than 100 feet. you can see a squad car at the end of the road blocking traffic. we saw a van go through the the street sign. looked like it was a few inches deep. we did not bring the rain boots, so we have not gone to see how deep the water is in the middle. forming on the roadway. you can see pieces of ice in the road. that is where the crew is working to try and repair this water main break. we shot video earlier today. showing the work that is being done are acceptable. lanes are shut down. air temperatures in the mid-20's today. wind chill factor is hampering efforts to get this water main repaired. they are not publicized anything about this break yet. earlier today, it did tweet out a photo of the command center with tv monitors

it was a 12" water main that broke four feet underground. they're replacing ground and will have to repave the road. here's what it looked like right after the water main broke. this was at 3 a.m., gushing into the basement garage of the moscone center. there was no damage but they had to pump the water out. public works rerouted the water flow. so no service disruptions right now. as they are repairing this 12" pipe, they have been investigating the cause of the break. it appears to be age. that thing is 120 years old, one of many that needs to be replaced. >> so we're looking at places where, one, we can somewhat identify to the best of our ability more aging pipes through a leak detection program and, where we can do them such that we have minimum impact on neighboring businesses. >> reporter: and they are trying to replace about 15 miles of water pipeline here a year in san francisco. but they have 1,000 miles total. a tall order. no estimate on exactly how much water was released overnight. back out here live now, you can see again it's

this all started with a water main break and sinkhole yesterday morning around 7:00.v hit the sinkhole which you partially covered with water and then was disabled but no one was injured. as crews worked to repair a broken 12-inch main, the southbound lanes of columbus boulevard between fitzwater and christian were closed as was the off ramp from 95. so far this morning we have seen cars come off the exit from 95 and again, one lane of traffic is getting by the work site on columbus boulevard. but that is expected to change placement crews may need to close all of the lanes in order to work safely at this location. from the traffic standpoint we're not seeing much of an impact yet but as it gets later it could really tighten things up here as far as impact to water service. at least some of the water we're told has been restored to a nearby apartment building that was impacting from this water main break. live in queen village katherine scott, channel6 "action news. matt. >> thanks, katherine. >>> new this morning police in portland oregon have made an arrest in the r
