the crew from malaysia. cnn's andrew stevens spent time with their loved ones in the days of the disappearance. he joins us now. good morning, andrew. >> reporter: good morning, john. 239 souls aboard mh-370. i have been staying in touch with many of the family members particularly here in kuala lumpur. i have been speaking to them in the last couple hours. they are saying at the moment we have been here before john. you remember just after mh-370 disappeared, there was a lot of speculation. a lot of false leads and false reporting about the actual plane being found which turned out to be untrue. they are just not prepared at this stage until there is a complete confirmation. this is why there is so much confirmation coming from the authorities. they are not prepared to think this may be part of the plane. interestingly, the deputy transport minister here in malaysia told reporters a couple hours ago, he is almost certain this flapper as it is being called was part of a 777. he did not say it was 370, but it

in search for missing malaysia airline 370. a preliminary assessment by u.s.ligence finding that someone controlling the plane deliberately flew it off course before it disappeared. two u.s. officials briefed on the assessment says it was prepared months ago and not intended for public release. malaysian investigators say there is no evidence of unusual behavior by the pilots for the cabin crew before the flight. meantime on reunion island new debris has washed ashore in addition to the wing component found earlier. remnants of what looks like a suitcase were found thursday and searchers are out scouring the shoreline for more. senior international correspondent nima elbagir has more. >> reporter: good morning, alison. the focal point will continue to be the stretch of beach. it plays into the broader theory that investigators are working with at the moment that perhaps a wider counter current is responsible for bringing debris from the initial search site across the indian ocean and off the coast of australia. they will see if the theory bears out. if it does

malaysia meet the list with 22 other treats including thailand and malaysia. sanctions can be economic and include armed embargoes. thailand is considered a hub. ed government officials are involved with the human traffickers. many local villages are involved. i don't think they benefit. >> reporter: if it remains on the t3 list it may avoid sanctions. the state departmented will not confirm or deny according to reuters, the u.s. plans to upgrade malaysia. 19 senators signed a statement saying that it would undermine the integrity of the process. and compromise efforts. many are exploited and attracted to practices. it's difficult to fathom how the state department could upgrade. with the reestablishment of diplomatic relations between cuba and the u.s. cuba is liking it be lifted to a tear 2 watch list. a recommendation that the report made, was to pass a law criminalizing prostitution for teenagers, 16 to 18. who fall in an area of consent. >> it's unclear that cuba has to follow up. even in the u.s., it makes it difficult. >> it's a crime that is profitable

the transpacific partnership would include malaysia. i think the u.s. is very committed to trying to get malaysia into that disagreement and therefore they felt they needed to do this even though there's an alternative path they could have taken. >> what about the situation of cuba? again the under secretary of state has been questioned and she said cuba has made progress in addressing sex trafficking within the country. >> well there's definitely a serious sex trafficking problem in cuba, that's the basis for it being on tier 3 all along. if you look at the report it's very thin in terms of what the cubans have actually done. i know they have been engaging more with the department of state on this issue. they didn't provide statistics on conviction is they took in 2013 at all. they did provide what they've been doing from 2013, but there's no indication that they took any action in 2014 at all. that seems very strange to me to upgreat them on that basis. >> david abramowitz thank you for joining us. >> thanks for having me. >>> let's t

the malaysia airline 370. also they will conduct tests to find out or get some clues as to what happened on impact and what angle the the plane impacted and what may have caused the plane to crash in the first place. one of the things this office here is specialized in is finding out whether or not possibly an explosion that might have caused the plane to crash. all of that is speculation at this point. these are the tests conducted here. this is the premier lab for the investigations in all of europe. it has been specifically assigned by the investigation authority. b.e.a. it is part of the french defense ministry. this is a military installation. at this point in time they are not saying when they will give us any update. they want to get the part and they want to start analyzing it. interestingly enough alison that suitcase will be brought to france and analyzed in a laboratory outside of paris. >> these investigators have an understanding about time is of the essence for these families. finding out before

at that point the search centered around malaysia.e been on this arc. based on those signals they were getting, that's when the search moved closer to australia. ships searching this last area making a detailed map of the ocean floor to try to spot the plane. but still nothing but false alarms until today. in order to get to reunion island debris had to travel from australia or malaysia. that's called this the indian ocean gyre and its currents that spin counter clockwise. let's talk about all of this with your cnn aviation analysts. daid is it's great to have both of you here. miles, what do you think about where this piece of debris has just been found? >> well there's nothing about the location of this piece of debris which would tell authorities to search anywhere else than they're already searching. so that's i guess, good news that they've been plowing through the ocean in the right spot. we know a lot of places where the plane isn't. but at least they're probably in the general vicinity. given the amount of time and the current

so this wasn't even necessary to do unless you just want to give malaysia a pass. the goal was to take the full weight off of the t.p.p. deal -- i should say take the full weight of the t.p.p. deal off the trafficking and persons report process. instead of choosing the route we worked out together, requiring the president to testify in writing that malaysia has taken concrete steps to deal with their very serious human trafficking problem the administration backed out. i see no reason why the comprehensive ban on fast-track for human traffickers should be amended. i see no reason why my willingness to accommodate should be amended. this underscores the need for further oversight of the trafficking in persons process both legislatively and through the noble work of human rights groups here in washington and out in the field. i plan to work with my colleagues to advance my amendment to the state authorization bill passed by the senate foreign relations committee last month which requires the state department to notify congress of all trafficking in persons upgrades a
