malaysia airlines has faced some tough questions about the decision to fly over ukraine, much of which is controlled by pro-russian separatists. recently, airlines have chosen to fly around the troubled airspace. but this morning an airline official pointed out this flight path had been approved by the international civil aviation organization. >> other airlines would fly through. [inaudible ] this is a tragic incident. it could have happened to any of us. >> there were a total of 298 people on board that flight. malaysia airlines says 173 of them were dutch. mourners have created a shrine outside of the dutch embassy in kiev. other passengers on board came from australia, belgium, canada, germany, new zealand, southeast asia and the united kingdom. this was the scene in kuala lumpur as relatives of some of those on bord arrived at the airport there, many in tears. a short time ago a representative from malaysia airlines said the company will be giving the families of each passenger an additional $5,000 payment to help them during this difficult time. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news.
