that is directed toward people like our next guest, malcolm nance. good to have you on this morning. >> good to see you. >> i had the pleasure to meet a few folks here like you, u.s. veterans, who have come over here to risk their lives to help defend ukraine and i always ask why, what is leading you to risk your life to come here? >> you know, i spent 20 years in the armed forces and 16 or so years in and out of u.s. intelligence. my entire motivation was that i believed in defense of democracy. i believed in the values that i was raised on as a child of philadelphia. my family served in the armed forces nonstop since 1864. and when my great, great grandfather ran away from slavery, he fought for the same values. i see those values being threatened here in ukraine on a strategic scale. ukraine is now involved with a nation that has sworn they would eliminate it as a culture, as a language, as a people. i had friends in the ukrainian armed forces in the first days of this fight that were begging for their lives saying they were going to die as the ru

much appreciated. >> joining me now from a secure location is malcolm nance. he's fighting with the international legion of territory defense of ukraine. we watched that video of you and ali was attempting to interview you for us. we saw the cruise missiles fly overhead. explain to us why you are there and what you are doing. >> well, as you know, i spent quite a bit of time here in the prewar period and when the invasion happened, i had friends in donetsk in the ukrainian army who are writing to us and telling us we're not going to survive tonight. we've been hit 500 times. these graduates of defense language institute are my friends. you know, as the more i saw of the war going on, the more i thought i'm done talking. all right? it's time to take action here. so about a month ago, the joined the international legion here in ukraine and i am here to help this country fight, you know, what essentially is a war of ex termination. this is a war and russia has brought it to these people and mass murdering civilians and there are people here like me who are here t

naval intel officer, malcolm nance, joining us now from western ukraine.th us. i know you've answered that question many times, but i think it's the most important question to be asked here, which is, why did you decide, i need to go and i need to fight? >> well, i was here about a month before the invasion. i was doing analysis of the russian order of battle. i was actually driving the routes we suspected they would have to use in the invasion. i spent a lot of time in the city of kyiv. and i even went with the commanders of the ukrainian armed forces down to their forward battle front in donetsk. and i met people that i knew here, people who were graduates of defense language institute, a school i'm a multi-language graduate from. i couldn't believe russia was going to commit this multitrillion dollar miss taj of savaging a very western, modern country. it's really not a question of nato that they attacked for. it's a question of democracy. this was a relatively well off, you know, east -- western european country. and so when the invasion happened and m

he's also a former naval intelligence officer, malcolm nance. thank you so much for being with me.t recording in a moment, but i want to start with you, sir. was this a decision to leave your job, join the fight, was it based on a single event or did this happen over time? >> well, it happened over time, but that period of time was quite small. you know, and it did have a precipitating event, and that was the invasion of ukraine, and my friends being trapped down in donetsk, being hit by hundreds of rounds of artillery and calling and telling their friends and family they were going to die within the next day or two. you know, you can't sit and listen to that and then watch the -- this incredible massacre of people as russia invaded and not want to actually do something. and i just decided that it was time to do something and take action using the skills that i had and offered them to the international legion for the defense of ukraine. >> so you said you had to do something. what is it that you are doing on a daily basis now there? >> well, everyone in the legion is a -- is essent

>> we were doing an interview with malcolm nance. the first one that crossed over, you didn't see it. we heard a thump. by the time the second one came, we looked up into the sky and saw the object flying across the sky and it was so big, at first i thought it was an airplane. these missiles are about 26, 27 feet long. they are the size of a small jet. we saw that one really whistle across the sky with a frightening sound and then a massive thump and smoke coming up from not far from where we were sitting and it was followed by several others. it was quite disconcerting. we've seen attacks on the outskirts of lviv but we have to be very clear, this was bang in the center of lviv. the noise was disconcerting, the thump was disconcerting. i can't imagine what it was like for residents sleeping in their apartment or malcolm was speculating it may have been launched from the sea but it's not clear. this is certainly the first time the russians have done such a serious target in the middle of city and this is the first time people have be

. >> so ali, you were talking to malcolm nance the minute those missiles were fired, and what was it like and what was the aftermath? >> reporter: hi, katy. it was surreal, and the first one went off and we didn't figure out what was going on, and we heard a whistling in the air and then a thump, and we got up from our places. i had never seen a cruise missile there myself, this was the first time. when it flew over our heads it was so big i thought it was an airplane, and then he confirmed it was a missile, and it was a loud whistling sound when it flies over your head, and then we realized this is a crowded residential center in lviv, and there's fuel depots of fuel the front lines. seven people were killed in that attack, and a 3-year-old child was wounded. the tragedy of that is that child just escaped kharkiv to get away from the relentless shelling the residents of kharkiv are feeling. that sense of security in this town has certainly been shattered. people were apprehensive before when the outskirts were hit, but i don't think anybody in this city would feel this is a refuge s

we were conducting an interview with malcolm nance. we heard this whistling sound over our heads. and then we weren't sure what it was. and then another, when i looked up, the missile was so big that at first i thought it was an airplane. and then we realize that they were cruise missiles, and that two, three pounded area in front of us. we saw black smoke rising. it was disconcerting for us to do this for a living. to go to the sort of places. i can't imagine what it was like for the civilian population in and around that area that was shelled. and i've got to tell you, lawrence, it is a heavily built up area. it was full of apartments, houses, a very residential area. now the russians say that they hit a warehouse where the ukrainians stored weapons that were given to them from the west. but they didn't say is that they hit an auto repair shop at a time in the morning where people are going about their business. collecting their kids to go to school, getting their tires fixed. there was an 8:30 in the morning, not four in the morning when those places would be emptied. and for t

i've seen a number of veterans including a good friend of both of ours, senior chief malcolm nance, formally a con man tighter here. he's dropped his commentating and actually gone to ukraine. he's done that on his own. i think we're going to discover it this former marine is that he was part of a contracted effort, and perfectly legitimate for the creighton government to go to any number of camp tractors -- the iraqi government did that, the afghanis government did that. i'm sure the ukrainians make use of those resources. he probably was under contract, there. we don't know, we're gonna find out as time goes by. we have to simply put our arms around his family and say that he went because he wanted to do what he saw was the right thing. >> yes, and hopefully this family can get his remains back and offer a proper burial for him. let me ask you also were talking about the top of the hour, the civilians reportedly leaving that mariupol steel plant, again this is according to russian state tv. can we hear assessment, if true, when these circumstances might be? what do you see is being likely?
