my name is eric mar, and we also have scott wiener and malia cohen, and we also have with us today supervisor chiu. hopefully we can finish this first item within the hour. if not, we will have the -- before we start on the first item, supervisor wiener had some comments. supervisor wiener: as the chairman indicated, we will be starting at 2:00. if you are here for that, you could come back. supervisor mar: so ms. miller, item number one, and president chiu is the chair. supervisor chiu: thank you. as i think many of you know, are waterfront holds a special place in the city. from the 1960's to the embarcadero freeway, we have had many battles. early next year, we will vote on another controversial project. this entails 145 luxury condominiums, which can only be built if the board decides to increase the 84-foot height to limit on that side to 136 feet. this would be the first high increase on the northern waterfront in almost 50 years. as you can imagine, this proposal has generated significant debate, as well as along the city. as i heard more about this, i had growing concerns about it. th

they're about how we relate to each other and so i am so proud to be up here with malia cohen, who is to create many, many new stories to come along with all of san francisco and the other supervisors up here and the oop leaders and al williams and the historical society who are doing very important work to document the contributions so that we can justify why we need to make a special effort to make sure that there is no outmigration, to make sure that there are jobs. to make sure we protect the family structure. because from my heart and where i come from and what my family is all about, i know what it is to be helped by the african-american community. i know that that's been a strong tring and -- thing and we wouldn't have survived without that kind of kep -- help. so i leave you here today to let you know what's in my heart and mind and let's kick off this celebration to unite everybody in this city and be broud -- proud of who we are, and thank you very much. >> thank you, mayor lee. we are about to bring up our keynote speaker. but i did want to mention we also have with us davi

[applause] >> sovereign lano county d.a., sonoma county d.a., supervisors mark farrell, malia cohen, charmen chu. judges, i understand they were all invited. i hope some are here. members of the council core and our fire chief, our wonderful fire chief joanne hayes-white. i met the person i'm going to introduce next way back in the 1960's and he had tried to buy a house in san francisco in forest noles. and he was refused because of race. and that was a long time ago, but this is a fact and so some of us went out, my daughter who is now a judge was in her stroller and we picketed the developer which was sun stream homes then on 19th avenue and finally that was put to rest. but it gives you and idea of how things change over time and how necessary it is to have people who care about these rights and who were willing to work for these rights. we became fast friends and we have for at least three decades now. i ran for the board of supervisors in 1969, no public official would support me but one. and it was willie brown. and since that time -- [applause] >> i think it's fair to say that

it appears the conditions of approval -- malia cohen? -- may i go on? right. president miguel: thank you. >> good afternoon. i would like to raise -- read portions of two letters, two boats that were taken at the coalition. the coalition is made up of over 45 neighborhood associations. it has applied for membership in amortization and that is how we heard about this. we did hear about this even though previous to that. we took this matter to task. we felt it was critical for the nob hill area. and after reading a portion [unintelligible] to the department of alcohol beverage control. the coalition opposes the granting of such liquor licenses as applied for by avatar and five nations -- live nation. we strongly oppose this project and the granting of the liquor licenses. another letter, we urge the board of supervisors to uphold an appeal and deny the issuance of the resumption by the planning department to exempt from [unintelligible] the proposed renovation construction. we ask that you deny a permit. >> good afternoon. i represent local 16. i have worked for
