. >> host: we're here at pepperdine university in malibu, california. what's the role of california in american gardens and american environmentalism? >> guest: california has always had an outside influence on not just californians bit rest of the country and the rest of the world because in a sense it's so visual. everything is bigger here, yosemite valley and the secretary a river and sierra nevada and the mojave desert. a landscape that is just powerfulfully iconic. and it's also a climate which is really, really seductive. it's drawn people here and when you draw people here to live in this splen for of nature, you -- splen discover nature, you ruin it and you can only run so far because you keep mucking up paradise, and eventually you'll muck up paradise so california is a kind of -- it's our national trauma and dilemma. it's also the case that environmental politics, environmental formation, environmental rhetoric, really matured in california, from john muir to david bro brower and the sierra club in northern california. modern environmentalism

he sat down with us at pepperdi pepperdine, in malibu, california. it's about 45 minutes. >> joining us is bruce hershonsohn. how long have you taught here, and what do you teach? >> i teach u.s. foreign policy, and started teaching here in the beginning of 1998. really when the school of public policy opened up for students. before that, i sort of had an affiliation with pepperdine since the mid -- early 1970s. >> what kind of affiliation? >> i think you know i used to work for president nixon. when you get a request to go to a college to give a speech or something, i always got the straw that meant i'm going to go in his place, and of course the college was never very delighted to see me, but too bad. so most of the colleges in those days, it was rough going. i felt i succeeded if i was still alive after the -- this was vietnam and all of that. so i remember sittings in a rental car, my hands on the steering while thinking, i made it, i got to the end of the speech and everything. so it was pretty rough going. vm when i went to pepperdine, it was t

right here at the malibu pier beach in california, smack in the middle of wealth and glamour. s considered a repeat offender. time after time scientists have found bacteria in this water right here where you can see children are playing, surfers are surfing. we're going to take some samples and find out how dirty it really is. we packed our sample bottles in a cooler and headed for a lab. we wait for the results knowing this water could be teeming with bacteria. but that's not stopping anyone from diving in. now, most beaches post warnings if bacteria counts are too high and even shut them down if the counts are out of control. but that could be too late for some swimmers. >> we surf all over the world and this is one of the only places where we are getting sick. >> it's kind of a bummer to hear that there is fecal matter. >> when you swim in contaminated water, there is a grim inventory of diseases that can be associated with that. from stomach flu, to pink eye, to ear infection, to eye infection, to -- >> reporter: okay, steve, we get the picture. malibu pier is in good compa

malibu. a video showing you the surf already picking up. we know californiate park officials closing malibu pier now. a pier was knocked loose in the afternoon. unfortunately a surfer losing his life being out in the open waters. life guards tried cpr. the man was later pronounced dead. malibu pier closed. some areas on the southeastern facing coast line is dangerous. here's marie at this hour again way away from los angeles. it will stay that way as it pushes to the north and west. labor day weekend approaching. that's the concern here for folks trying to make it back to the beach and wanted to get on the wa tergs because it is quite warm across southern california the next couple of days. that certainly is not going to help with what's happening in that region. want to take you out to south korea. this is the satellite perspective. population, 3.6 million people, the size of los angeles. five people have lost their lives, five people still considered missing across this region. in fact, train service shut down. nuclear power plant, a cooling facility there

busy rescuing distressed swimmers and tropical storm marie battered southern california with gigantic waves. >> overnight in malibu a historic lifeguard house that has served as a backdrop in movies and tv shows apparently collapsed into the ocean. we have more from seal beach, california. >> reporter: along the southern california coast nature is treating wave watchers to a show unlike any they've ever seen. >> these guys getting crazy rides and people cheering on the beach, it's a good show for free. >> it's exciting to see this much surf. i don't think we've seen a swell like this in a decade. >> reporter: the massive waves were relentless from newport beach where this boogey border was thrown sky high to catalina island where two piers were destroyed and boats and vehicles were tossed ashore to malibu where water threatened multi-million dollar homes and damaged the pier. it's all because of tropical storm marie 800 miles west of mexico's baja, california peninsula. even surfers legends like blair hamilton couldn't resist caught in this video riding directly under the malibu pier. hamilton not only surfed, he

malibu, where water threatened multimillion dollar homes and damaged the pier. it's all because of tropical storm marie. 800 miles west of mexico's baja, california peninsula. ven surfers like legend hamilton couldn't resist. caught in this video riding directly under the malibu pier. hamilton not only surfed. he saved. he assisted in a rescue -- >> his eyes were big and he was appreciative he was back on the land. >> reporter: one of hundreds that kept lifeguards busy up and down the coast. lifeguard jacob reed says he rescued one man caught in the powerful currents. >> he was panicked. he was very scared. i came out and i went way too far over my head. >> reporter: bulldozers were called in to beef up the shoreline and protect expensive beach homes. thousands of spectators stayed out of the water but not necessarily out of harm's way. snapping pictures dangerously close to the crashing waves. >> a surge comes up and it wraps around the back of them and then it can pull them back out to the water out to sea. >> so far there has been one surf related death. the high surf is expected to stick around until tomorrow evening and then calm down and make it safer

california. the surf is way up malibu. look at that.hough, have had to perform more than 100 rescues and say many surfers aren't accustomed to such big waves. it is amazing what's going on both coasts at the same time. now, for us, it's not as hot as it has been the last couple of days and tomorrow's gonna be even a little bit cooler but that rip current risk, still there, going to go down a bit, but still there, a steamy weekend ahead, humidity and heat are coming back but not until after they play football tonight. great football weather. 80 degrees right now, 18-mile-an-hour wind, humidity is low. it's cooler than it was yesterday. and temperatures in the mid-70s to near 80 degrees. look at that 76 degrees in westchester, pottstown. that's pretty cool. with sunshine for this time of the year, how about at the shore? look at the wind, blowing offshore. so, two things. it's just as warm at the beach as it is inland and the offshore winds calm down the ocean. when you have a northwest wind generally, you don't really get much in the way

california, high surf advisories are up from baja to santa barbara. teri okita is monitoring the surge south of los angeles. >> the waves have killed at least one person, a surfer near malibu pulled unconscious from the water. the waves here reached as high as two-story buildings today. it's a surfer's delight but the swells also require the rescue of dozens of people along southern california's coast. nearly 200 were pulled from the water yesterday in l.a. and orange county. >> this is the biggest swell i've seen in 25 years. >> reporter: joe bailey said they had to call in lifeguards. the rip currents threaten even strong swimmers. >> it's makes it difficult to bring a victim through the surf. we're having to take victims to a certain part of the beach where the wave action is left. >> reporter: low lights areas were protected from the side by sand berms. orange county fire crews helped sandbag the shoreline. >> so far everything is holding. >> reporter: the surf called flooding overnight on the beach. in malibu, multi-million-dollar homes were threatened and damaged the pier. michael wesmichael westmorelandt his lives. >> if you know your limits, it's okay out there. >>
