expensive and exclusive neighbourhoods in the fire appears to have reached about a mile away from the malibu piernd all the iconic beaches. we understand a large part of malibu has been evacuated, about 6000 people at the moment. there is also a university in the area and it has its students sheltering on campus at the moment. they are fire resistant buildings but they were able to see the flames outside the window. 0utside about 700 firefighters have been tackling this fire and the number could increase as they try to contain this. we understand also power has been deliberately cut in a larger area for safety, to stop any electrical problems starting more fires and escalating this. it is not clear yet what started this fire but we understand there are a powerful combination of conditions that have made it particularly dangerous, that is a windstorm thatis dangerous, that is a windstorm that is blowing, very dry grasslands after a very dry december that has contributed to this. this area of california has seen a series of wildfires in recent years so emergency services are no stranger to dealing

, the iconic malibu pier is right down the street from us, and right behind us here is nobu malibu, very high end restaurant and some firefighters just pulled in here to kind of monitor all of these restaurants here. there's also many, many houses scattered throughout here and then just on the other side of us up here, we saw a lot of flames in this neighborhood. these are homes that are overlooking the ocean the activity with firefighters has died down in this area for now, because the flames have jumped to a different part of the canyon. demir if we can just move over just a little bit more, perhaps we can see some of the flames here from the distance. but again these fires in these canyons are very difficult because these are two lane roads that go up into the hills, making it very difficult for firefighters to get an access to these neighborhoods. and then there's also all of these residents. this is a fire that blew up in the middle of the night. so we have seen many residents here along pch just sitting and watching not evacuating, even though there are evacuation orders. we'

this is the malibu pier, which according to the city of malibu, has also taken on flames from the franklin fire as it crossed over the pacific coast highway within the past 40 minutes or so. there are structures that there are currently burning, and they say that the pier has been impacted as well. remember, this is a landmark of that area. so here's some of the footage coming out of pepperdine university but look at the reflection in the window of the flames near the library where the students were asked to shelter in place. that is terrifying. that is something you don't want to see particularly dangerous situations. still in place across southern california la and into ventura counties remember, these are rarely issued by the national weather service. last time was in november of this year for the mountain fire that caused so much destruction in portions of ventura county. these are rare but they're becoming more common as our climate continues to warm. check out these wind gusts from the fire 93mph, and some of those higher peaks, again expecting to even top out this morning as we hit
