three sisters were found malnourished and dirty. allegedly held captive in a home in tucson for as long as two years. now their mother and stepfather are under arrest. laura ingle is here with the story. what are they saying about girls? >> i just got off the phone. all three girls are in child protective custody this morning, hopefully getting a hot meal in the a shower. ere held hostage and theyhat hadn't been allowed to bathe for months. investigators say the girls were aged 12 and 13 and 17, allegedly were locked up and kept inside of the bedroom of their tucson, arizona, family home by their stepfather and mother. the two youngest girls were able to escape out a window and onto a neighbor's house after they said that their stepfather tried to break into their bedroom brandishing a knife. neighbors then called police. >> they discovered two juvenile females extremely filthy. approximately 12 and 13 years old. officers responded to the family residence and made entry and discovered yet a third 17-year-old female that was also imp

are now so poor, are struggling so much that if they didn't have food assistance they would be malnourished that's extraordinary. and the idea that we cannot talk about this is even more extraordinary. the idea that we went through an entire presidential election campaign last year, and neither candidate made a major speech on poverty. actually, one candidate did. he talked about 47% of the population. [laughter] but with that exception, neither candidate addressed the problem. obama started to calm made a very interesting speech at the 15th anniversary commemoration of martin luther's kings "i have a dream" speech and he did talk about poverty. he talked about the fact that if you're going to deal with the issue of social justice, he had a coal poverty in america but obama is now talking about it but the question is that it was political momentum behind it. it will result in the programmatic change. probably not unless people like you and me and everybody else that cares about the issue pushes it because the default is if you don't push it, it's easier not to talk about it. .. it is one ou

. >> all three juveniles were extremely dirty, as i mentioned, and malnourished and stated they had nothed within the last four to six months. they were kept in filthy living conditions separately and told patrol officers they had not seen each other in almost two years and were kept separate within the bedrooms within that house. >> awful. paul is working this one today. how did police learn about this? how did they find these sisters? >> well, it all started with they responded to the house with a story the father was then chasing the girls with a knife, and apparently, according to police, the girls were able to break out of the house, go through a window, and then went to a neighbor's to talk about what had happened to them in detail. they said that they had been held captive for a long time, that they were fed once a day, and according to the neighbors and police reports, they were unkempt and they were filthy. more details emerging. the police chief saying just a short time ago that the girls were held psychologically and technologically, quite an extensive system. surveilled 24/7

how many families are malnourished. how many families live in housing that is really unhealthy. but this doesn't answer that. we also need to get an honest count to understand how much people are really receiving in government aid. we spent close to $1 trillion a year on assisting poor people, cash, food and housing but it isn't all that instantly converted it into cash, it's close to six times the amount needed to raise every family's income above the poverty level. even if you just take a cash, food and housing income is more than twice what's needed to wipe out poverty in the u.s. we spent a lot more than people realize and effectively the government doesn't give a taxpayer credit for that expenditure. >> guest: we might have some disagreements about all of that but maybe we can get to that. >> host: we want to bring some of our viewers into the conversation. let's go to oklahoma on our line for democrats. >> caller: hello. i was listening to your conversation about the $23,000 a year being poverty guidelines. i wonder where you feel that individuals that, say, their social s

gerentologist or a physician who deals with senior citizens to understand that when a senior is malnourishedoesn't get the nutrition that he or she needs, that senior is more likely to break a hip by falling, that senior is more likely to get sick, end up in the emergency room and the hospital at great cost. everybody knows -- no debate about this -- that when seniors have the companionship, when they have the nutrition that they need, they are less likely to end up in the emergency room, they're less likely to end up in the hospital and we can save money. study after study she's investing in programs like the older american act -- older americans act, and that is the meals on wheels program, the congregate meal program, employment opportunities for seniors, dealing with elder abuse, when you invest in those programs, you save money. not only from a moral -- you not only from a moral perspective make life better for seniors, you actually save federal money by preventing other bad things from happening. so i would hope -- i would hope that our committee and members of the senate can work toge
