vermont utility company reported it found malware.ived a warning from the department of homeland security a warning about cyber threats what the federal government refers to grizzly was on the computer here in question. this is the same malware that was used to influence the election in november. the company said it was not connected to the power grid that serves close to 20,000 customers. had it been this could have been kas strosk. nonetheless, it is concerting for officials including the governor for vermont who responded in a statement. i want to read you a portion in that statement which he is clearly expressing outrage here. he said, quote, this episode should highlight the urgent need for our federal government to vigorously pursue and put to an end the sort of russian meddling i call upon the federal government to conduct a full and complete investigation of this incident and undertake remedies to ensure this never happens again. this government warning initially led to the big red flag and the discovery of this vulnerability.

this malware on this laptop in vermont. how worrisome, potentially dangerous is this to you? >> it's alarming the attackers are going after utility grid. one thing we should note is we're doing same things to other countries, it's used for military preparedness. so this is happening all over the place and it's very concerning because usually the energy grid is very vulnerable, it has a number of exposures and very easy to get into. >> so you are saying this is a just in case, that we would hack and other countries might hack ours and so it's not so worrisome to you until the next step is taken? >> reporter: it's worrisome from the fact that our grid is that vulnerable to where we see a lot of these attacks happening. but this is definitely used for military preparing to shut down the electric grid. we did the same thing to iran. those were to cripple the centra futures, so we see this happening all the time from china, from russia, iran, and we do the same thing back as well. >> so general, sources telling cnn they are not clear on the full scope or intent or if it is indeed

now, this evidence is based on a type of malware. that's software designed to hurt computers and it was used against russian enemies in ukraine and allegedly the dnc. that link is crucial. cybersecurity firm crowd source saying today the use of that similar malware shows russia behind both attacks. in the ukraine, those tools hacked an app to thwart the russian opposition. crowd source says that the russian hacking helped putin target opposition fighters. then, thousands of miles away in washington, apparently, the same tools were used to target the dnc, showing a russian hand in both plots, that's according to a new crowd strike report. another piece of evidence in the long-running controversy over russia's hacking. now, crowd strike, people say, is more credible, because, a, they work directly on the dnc investigation, and b, they employ former u.s. officials. but still, the u.s. government itself has yet to release this kind of detailed evidence. nbc news national security reporter ken delaney working this story broke the story. k
