fire officials say that two vehicles got stuck in dangerously high water in manassas. a number of people in the pickup truck got out on their own but the driver of the minivan told abc 7 news she had to be rescued because the water around her vehicle was nearly waist deep. a woman who lives nearby was amazed how quickly the road flooded. >> it is incredible. i have lived here a couple of years, and is always floods, but never this quickly. >> they rescued one person. >> no, this is incredible. i just drove through here about 45 minutes ago. this happened quickly. >> the driver of the minivan is grateful for the prince william county firefighters who rescued her. we also heard of another water rescue in the northern part of the county. fire officials say that everybody got out ok, but in many cases, these flash floods do not end well. jay korff, abc 7 news. >> we will take any silver lining that we can get. we are tracking the storm's 24 hours per day. for live radar at any time, click on the weather had at wjla.com. -- click on the weather tab at wjla.com. >> breaking

terrifying moments for a manassas man as he was caught in the middle of quick rising waters. the rain overnight pounded northern virginia, causing the driver to be trapped in his car. john gonzalez joins us from manassas with the swift water rescue. >> a number of roads and prince george's county have closed and buckled. the owner of that pickup truck tried to drive through during the height of the flood. we spoke with the minutes after he was rescued. kelly, on his way to work this morning, did not realize the water gushing onto piper lane in manassas was that threatening. >> i thought it was ok but it was mid door level once i got into it and the vehicle started floating. >> he no longer had control of his white pickup truck. they got to him in a matter of hours. >> there's not much you can do but hope it stops somewhere. >> challenged by the deluge of rain and the creek being overwhelmed, it took them several attempts to get to the trapped driver. >> we had about 10 incidents and of rescued four people. >> with the road turned into a river, crews were eventually able to sa

after the first battle of manassas in july of 1861, in which the union was actually defeated, the men came streaming bagsed into stu -- back into the city, and the city, literally the confederates could have walk in and taken the city. after that, with the fear, more and more fortifications were built and general john g. bernard, who you might call the father of the civil war defenses in washington, and he was in charge of them for almost the whole war, started developing the system of fortifications around the capital and how they would actually defend the city from enemy invaders. after the second manassas, which was also a union defeat, fear again and some more i'm tus to make sure the fortifications defending washington were doing their job. over the four years, many of the forts were changed. they were made larger and guns within them were changed to get the best function out of each fort and out of each system itself. the defenses were tested in july of 1864. before i say that, there were raids on the forts by the guerrilla forces like moseby where they would come in and steal h
