, so immediately troops were sent down into washington, d.c., and then after the battle of first manassas, the feet 35 miles from washington, they started building a series of forts and fortifications that by the time a couple of years later, washington was completely ringed by interconnected series of 67 forts. they were called the defenses of washington. they were kind of like a beltway. they even went across the po potom potomac. those forts, only one of those forts exists today and that's fort ward in alexandria, virginia. fort stevens, where we're going to go later, has been partially rebuilt and that's where the end of my story happens, outside of fort stevens. but these forts were very well built. they were all connected by fortifications and berms, and they were designed to be manned by about 35,000 troops, but now we're in the summer of 1864, just about every able-bodied union troop is down outside richmond in petersburg in the eastern theater. we don't know the exact number, but we think only about 10,000 troops were on the barricades at washington, d.c. who were these 10,000 tr

after the first battle of manassas in july of 1861 in which the union was actually defeated, the men came streaming back into the city and the city literally the con fed rats could have walked in and taken the city. so after that with the fear, more and more fortifications were built and general john g. bernard who you might call the father of the civil war of fences of washington and he was in charge of them for almost the whole war started developing the system of fortifications around the capital and how they would actually defend the city from enemy invaders. after second manassas, which was also a union defeat, fear again and some more impetus to make sure that the fortifications defending washington were doing their job. over the year, the four years, many of the forts were changed. they were made larger. guns within them. they were changed to get the best function out of each fort and out of the system itself. the defenses were tested in july of 1864. now before i say that, there were raids on the forts guerrilla forces where they steal horses or supplies or whatever. but the

it's slowly moving to the east at about 15 miles per hour heading towards manassas. this other thunderstorm, which is moving at about 30 miles per hour also is a severe thunderstorm. it is just kind of grazing the northern edges of the district of columbia here on the broadcast house in northwest dc. we've been hearing the thunder and lightning, expected to head into northern prince george's county at 6:43. you'll get this storm at about 6:55. heavy downpours are possible as we are looking at the rainfall rates in excess of one-inch per hour with this system. and when andrea was showing us the live pictures, you could see that there was some ponding on the roadways there, so just take it very easy if you are heading through one of the thunderstorms. right now it is still very hot. that's the other big story of the day. it's 91 in downtown washington, much cooler behind these storms. it is only 76 right now in german town, but those temperatures are going to rebound as we head into tomorrow. we've gotten all the way up to 96 degrees today at reagan international. it w

it was supposed to arrive in manassas at 2:40 the afternoon. it never arrived. it kept flying into restricted airspace. you can see the distances we are talking about on our map. the black dot is manassas. the plane through into the 15-mile restricted airspace. that is when two f-16 fighter jets were scrambled to investigate this non--responsive aircraft. they tried to get the pilot to pull up. they escorted the plane on a northeast coast over virginia's sure until it ran out of fuel and crashed. the cessna reached an altitude of 21,000 feet, pretty high for a small, private plane. it is too early to find out if this was pilot error or mechanical failure. conditions very tough. an overnight search for a pilot and the small aircraft. richard reeve, abc 7 news. >> the red cross is helping to cool local families forced out of their homes after a propane tank explosion. this happened at an apartment building on 3rd street in southeast abc. d.c. were no -- southeast there were no injuries. police made an arrest for a sexual assault. is accused of attacking a 19-year-

after second manassas in august of 1862, they decided to make this larger because of its location. it's very -- it's on a high ground, plus it covers 7th street which today is george avenue. it was the 7th street extended which a lot of people used. so it was important to protect it. so they made it larger so it was about 375 yards perimeter. as i mentioned, it was, perhaps, the most famous fort. that's because of the battle of ft. stevens on july 11th, 12th, of 1864 when jubal early brought troops up through the valley, up around frederick, maryland, and then in toward washington, d.c., on july 11th. he came very near the fort here, itself. his men were exhausted. they did kind of feel it out little bit that day but decided they would have a demonstration in force the next day. now, i've explained before that these defenses were mutually supportive, so if you attacked ft. stevens, you were going to catch fire from the forts on both sides. even jubal early in his demonstration on the 12th realized that and decided to actually leave. now, the defenses, as i mentioned, had started be

and then after the battle of first manassas, the defeat 30 miles in washington, they started building a series of forts that by the time a couple of years later, washington was completely ringed by an interconnected series of 67 fots. they were called the defenses of washington. they were a beltway and they even went across the potomac. now those forts, only one of those forts exists today and that's fort ward in virginia. fort stevens where we're going later has been built. but these forts were very well built. connected by berms. they were designed to be manned by about 30,000 troops. but now we're in the summer of 864. just about every able bodied troop is down there. we tonight know the exact number but we think about 10,000 troops were on the barricades at waurk washington, d.c. they were members of what was called the veteran reserve corps. the veteran reserve corps had just changed their name. before that it was known as the invalid corps. they changed the name for obvious reasons. most people i think know there were so many casualties that washington, d.c. was one giant hospit
