this unfinished railroad embankment ran through the manassas area. contrary to the popular conception, jackson's troops did not use that landmark as a trench for protection. in most cases, they were found only by a skirmish line, as the terrain required. these provided an advance warning of any approaching generals. if there were some military serious, they would order this men -- they would order these men into this cut. jackson is not deploying his men on august 28 in the cut. skirmishers are nearby. men are not taking a position. it is a strong position, but it -- but it isable not invulnerable. jackson's flanks are particularly weak. additionally, the fronts along the left and center of these lines, prevented the use of effective artillery. there was not a consistent line in which to align troops. some of the cuts were over 15 feet down, too deep, while other cuts were more level with the ground. this position would further solidify, after the days events of august 28. but for the first time in the jackson switched strategic and tactical pursuits

this was a field hospital for the first manassas. i have to tell you i have been to a lot of museums and i rave about what she has done. it is far above and beyond any museum experience you have ever had. you walk in and you are literally hit by the smells and the sites and sounds of being in a civil war hospital. she and her colleagues have worked to make it a truly immersive experience to sort of understand not just civil war medicine but the civil war in , the early stages up or which -- stages of the war which is a , lot different than what you are seeing in 1864 and 1865. she has done wonderful work there. i am very happy to have her with us as a special guest tonight.
