large-scale battle of the civil war in july 1861 followed by 13 months later the second battle of manassas which was much larger and between these two about 4000 men died and tens of thousands were wounded. those are some powerful statistics. today we will diving a little bit more beyond the statistics and look at what happened to some of these poor unfortunate soldiers who were killed or maimed as well as the stories of those who tried to save them. i come to this with a relatively unique perspective. i am the superintendent and get to make those fun decisions dealing with how we tell the story, the interpretation of the story and the disposition of the human remains. what we do with these. i also come to it as an archaeologist. i started in the park service and although at the time this discovery was made it was long before i came to be superintendent. i was doing congressional affairs stress much like this minus beard and got a call that there were some really important stuff and because of my background they asked if i could come and lend a hand and i come at this with the perspective
